The last race of the Frostbite One

Design Series, hosted at the Tacoma Yacht Club and organized by Fleet #8 of the Cal 20 Association, was held Saturday, April 23. Five of the Cal 20’s moored in the dry storage lot at the Tacoma Yacht Club had been lowered in the water using the crane at TYC the day before, and another, along with six San Juan 21’s, arrived by trailer and were launched at the Pt. Defiance boat launch ramp. They motored over to the Guest Moorage dock at the Tacoma Yacht Club, and preparations for the day of racing began. Cool Change, a beautiful 36’ trawler owned by Lenora and John Long, was tied up with the big yellow TYC markers and race flags aboard. Former sailors, they are now often the committee boat for many TYC regattas. The day couldn’t have been more

perfect. After a month of clouds and rain, the sky was a beautiful blue. The sun warmed us, and now I could hardly wait to get underway. My husband and I are owners of a comfortable 43’ Tollycraft, but since racing in college, I will forever be a sailor. I have joined the Tacoma Yacht Club’s Focus on Sailing Program so that I can go sailing in the Cal 20’s. The last time I raced was probably

25 years ago, with Michael Collins, advertising director of 48° North magazine, when we raced Tasers out of Shilshole. For this regatta, I was aboard Surf City, owned by Joe Petrich. He raced many years ago, and this was his first race aboard his Cal 20. It was exciting to leave the dock, toss our tow line to Cool

Change, daisy chain with Jon Thompson’s and Debbie Yeend’s Cal 20 and be towed to Quarter Master Harbor where the Cals and San Juans would race. As we were being towed with wind on our faces, I eagerly anticipated the start of the three races. Seals bobbed their heads up as we passed by as if to welcome us on this glorious day. I enjoyed the camaraderie between

the sailors aboard the boats as they sailed along. However, once the warning horn blew, serious sailing began. There were three races, two long and one short. The calls of over early, starboard, hold your course, overlapping all started to bring back the memory of racing rules. Wind that moved us along easily over the water to being becalmed while trying to round the Manzanita buoy were all part of this great day of racing. At the end of the day as we were

being towed back to TYC, I reflected on the dedicated sailors who have brought one design racing and the Cal 20 Fleet #8 to Tacoma. It is such a great opportunity for anybody who wants to get out sailing on the water. The sailors are all so enthusiastic about sailing and eager to share their knowledge. If you own a Cal 20, you can join the National Cal 20 Class Association and Fleet #8 for camaraderie, racing, knowledge, and a great time. If you don’t want to buy your own Cal 20, you can join Tacoma Yacht Club and Focus on Sailing and have the incredible opportunity to get out on the water sailing in a fantastic boat. by Margaret Reyhner
