Discovery Bay slowly being eroded by the Strait of Juan de Fuca wave and weather forces. Designated a National Wildlife refuge by congress in 1982, the island has been habituated primary by wildlife. The exception is a single person who calls this island his solitary home. As we rounded Protection Island
several hours later, the sun began its set over the Strait. We prepared to hoist our spinnaker and had a moment of pause. In distance racing there are these amazing moments of pause. Sometimes lasting only a matter of a few minutes, time almost slows to a stop. You are given the opportunity to look around and see the world that surrounds you in a heightened sense of awareness. With a multi-colored sky overhead and quicksilver water below, the spinnaker was up and we were off and running back to Seattle in 20 plus knots of breeze with Wasabi close on our heels. Trading places was the story for the
remainder of the race. Evenly matched with your competition, tactics are critical.

Don Wills, aboard his well known sloop Shoot the Moon, had a great experience with a race-long duel against Darby, the C&C 121 skippered by Steven Tuck. Don’s crew sailed a hard fought race staying focused through the waning hours of the day. As evening set, they enjoyed a wonderfully prepared dinner to keep the crew happy and content. At their 2:00 am finish Don and his crew received the sound of the SYC shotgun, class line honors and proof of determination. The race proved to be a close match
for many boats in both the long and short courses. Racing the short course with
Lorenzo Migliorini on the J/105 Allegro Vivace, Phil Bylsma was impressed with how close their class finished. “With a constant change of positioning and separation throughout the race, the vast majority of the class finished within only a couple yards of each other at end”. Ian Sloan aboard Icon summarized, “their crew worked tirelessly to keep the boat

moving south through a strong ebb current and softening breeze to hold their lead of the Long course as Flash and Wasabi closed in. Icon succeeded in winning the line and correcting over the 2nd place Flash by seven minutes. Toward the finish, the welcome
site of the SYC committee boat and its flashing beacon came into view. For many the wind grew lighter until it shut down completely just shy of the finish line. It was now a full on drift to determine who would make the line first. Everyone aboard Flash quickly shifted their weight leeward to heel the boat and keep us moving. Very long seconds passed as we drifted through the finish line. To the sound of the horn, we had placed second with Wasabi close behind, taking the last podium spot. The distance racing and close competition that we all experienced at SYC’s Protection Island Race this year was highly rewarding and certainly a great deal of fun.
