AC Experience in Cabo Earlier this month my girlfriend, Karen, and myself

took a cruise with a stop in Cabo San Lucas. While there we went on the America’s Cup Sailing experience where we had the opportunity to race on the New Zealand 24 meter boat against the Australian team. These were the same boats that were used in the challenge race against the Swiss team. It was a great experience with a fantastic crew. The crew from Cabo Adventures took the time to tell us the history of the America’s Cup race and explain the evolution of the race. They then split us up into two teams, had us select a crew captain and then led us out on our adventure. We left the port of Cabo and headed south into the Pacific Ocean where they had a course set up for us to challenge the Australian team. Our crew was great as they explained the design of the boat and the basics we needed to be able to race. We all started out as grinders on the winches with the men manning the main sail and the women on the head sail. Each station had a crew member directing us and educating us as the race began. After we made the first leg of the race and rounded the mark our skipper, Cam Knox, began to give each of us a chance to take the helm. I was fortunate enough to have had some sailing experience and when it was my turn Cam told me to watch the telltails and gave me a mark to sail on. It was an experience I will never forget, being at the helm of an America’s Cup sailboat on the open Pacific. It was a close race and the Austrailan boat crossed the finish line seconds ahead of us, but we all felt like winners that day. On our way back to the port I pulled out my copy of 48° North and asked Cam if I could get my picture with him. He was more than happy to pose with me and then asked if he could keep the magazine saying it would make for good reading. I would recommend anyone who enjoys sailing and is in Cabo to look up the Cabo Adventure team and take the adventure. If you do, say “Hi” to Cam for me and make sure to bring him another copy of your magazine to read. Sincerely, Neal Shervey St Helens, OR
