Pattern Quilt Assembly

Finished Size 58” x 74” (147.3cm x 187.9cm) For completion of this quilt, assemble the blocks according to the illustration.

1. Sew blocks lengthwise in three columns. Column 1: Hound, Cat, Seahorse, Horse Column 2: Hawk, Snake, Bull, Salmon Column 3: Stag, Fox, Wren, Swan

2. Sew columns together.

Best Practice for Borders As this quilt was created in instalments, you likely created your blocks over time. For some of us, projects over time can result in varying block sizes as ¼” seams may vary from scant to generous depending on the machines, fabrics, pace and even our mood!

To account for this, we strongly encourage quilters to add borders by actual measurement of the quilt top.

Lengthwise Borders 1. Fold the quilt top.

2. Mark the centre point at fold with a pin.

3. Open quilt and measure the right side distance of the quilt top.

4. Measure the left side distance of the quilt top.

5. Measure the distance of the centre, marked by pin, of the quilt top.

If all three measurements are the same, congratulations, you have sewn a very accurate quilt top! Prepare two borders at this size.

For the majority of us who haven’t resulted in three like measurements, figure the border size on the average. For example:

Lengthwise: left side of quilt 58”; right side of quilt 58¼”; centre of quilt 58½”

Volume 2 Issue 6 | Irish Quilting 33

Total = 174¾” divide by three for an average size of 58¼”. Prepare borders at the average.

6. Pin borders at the centre mark on edge and work outwards. Sew to edge.

Repeat the full process for the remaining two borders, as the measurements are of the opposite dimension and now include the added first border widths.

Materials 2 3¼” x 33” black strips for inside border 2 3¼” x 51½” black strips for inside border 2 4” x 58½” red strips for outside border 2 4” x 66½” red strips for outside border 7 2½” x WOF black strips for border

1. Attach black shorter strips to the sides of quilt.

2. Attach black longer strips to the top and bottom of the quilt.

3. Attach shorter red strips to the sides of the quilt.

4. Attach longer red strips to the top and bottom of the quilt.

FINISHING TOUCHES 1. Layer top, wadding and backing.

2. Quilt. Our quilter used an overall meandering design. She used a variegated thread to highlight the great colours of the quilt. When seen against the darker solid borders, the thread highlights the bright colours of the quilt.

3. Prepare binding by attaching strips diagonally. 4. Fold in half and press. 5. Attach binding to quilt using a walking foot.
