Pattern Piecing Instructions


Much of our turkey is made with half-square triangles (HSTs). Using the illustration, review which colour combinations are needed for the HSTs: 6 brown/red; 1 red/cream; 3 cream/dark brown; 1 cream/light brown; 1 cream/black; 1 orange/brown.


1. Create HST using 1⅞” squares (use Sandwich Method seen in Reconstruction pattern, page XX).


2. Piece the turkey pieces into units, ensuring correct orientation.


3. Sew units together, ensuring correct orientation. 4. Prepare backgrounds by pressing.


5. Lay out the various pieces for each appliqué block. When happy with placement, fuse to the background.


6. Sew a hand or machine buttonhole stitch around all raw edges. If machine sewing, use a stabiliser at the back of the block while stitching. Use stitch and tear or copy paper and remove when stitching is complete.


Embellishment 1. Stitch eye on turkey. 2. Stitch feet on turkey. 3. Stitch stems on jug block. 4. Sew buttons as flowers on jug block. 5. Stitch eyes and legs on rooster.


Assembly


4. Sew 1½ x 7½” cream strip to either side of turkey. 5. Sew 1½”x 8½” to top and bottom of turkey. 6. Trim turkey block to 8½” block.


Appliqué: Flower


and Jug Blocks 1. Trace all parts for the flower and jug blocks in this instalment to the paper side of fusible web, following manufacturer’s instructions. Draw each element separately with adequate spacing.


2. Cut beyond the line and fuse to the wrong side of chosen fabrics.


3. Cut on the line. Tis ensures the adhesive applies to the edge of each patch.

Press after each block and construct the bottom strip of quilt centre. 1. Sew a flying geese unit to the side of flower block. 2. Sew new unit to correct side of the jug block.


3. Sew the turkey block to correct side of piece with jug block.


4. Sew a flying geese unit to the correct side of piece with turkey block.


5. Sew crazy heart block to the correct side of piece with flying geese unit.


Borders


Using borders created in Volume 2, Issue 1 complete the quilt top.


1. Confirm measurements of top and border length, trimming where necessary.
