WITH OUR DESIGNERS, LEARNING WHAT

QUILTING AND LIFE IN IRELAND IS LIKE FOR THEM. IN THIS ISSUE, PAT CHATS WITH RUTH MURRAY

How do you and your family celebrate Saint Patrick’s Day in Ireland?

We celebrate Saint Patrick’s Day by going to our local parade, usually standing in the freezing cold. Ten, home to watch the Dublin parade on TV! Not very exciting, I’m afraid.

What is your guilty pleasure? A Yorkie bar—all to myself!

Do you remember your first sewing project?

Yes. A Sun Bonnet Sue wall hanging.

What machine did you learn to sew on?

A basic Singer. I treated myself to it for my 40th birthday which was, of course, only a couple of years ago!

Are you creative in the kitchen as well as in the sewing room?

Ruth Murray is an Irish designer whose Country Club pattern, final

instalment appears on page XX. Ruth lives with her husband and family in County Waterford.

Only when I have to be! Especially after a day of sewing, we have a “mixum and gatherum” for dinner which is a mix of whatever is gathered from the fridge and cupboard!

Any creative family traditions?

Yes. At Easter, since David (my eldest son) was a baby, we paint

duck eggs. We have a huge collection after 20 years and five children. At Christmas, our favourite is our gingerbread house, which is now made entirely by my three girls who have it down to a fine art, right down to the “Flake” logs at the front door. Where is your favourite holiday destination?

Te South of France.

What is your favourite season of the year and why?

Spring. I love watching the garden coming into bloom. I especially love daffodils; they come back every year with no effort from me!

Best advice you’ve ever received?

“Bring it to your own door.” In other words it means, how would you feel if it happened to you? Advice from my mom.

Last time you told a lie?

Te answer to question 4! Te years since my 40th birthday, but I will keep you guessing!

Quote to remember you by? I came, I saw, I quilted!
