Pattern Piecing


Instructions Flags 1. Sew an orange, white and green strip together (white in the centre). Press seams away from the white.


Repeat for a total of five sets. (If using the 2” x 21” strips, make ten sets.)


2. Cross cut 3½” units of each set. Diagram 1


Tis creates 12 flag units from each of the five three-colour sets (or six flag units from the ten 2” x 21” sets) totaling 60 flags. Te quilt top uses 56 flags.


Tip


Use the extra four flags to construct a quilt label.

Sashing 1. Sew a 1” brown strip to the end of flag units side by side. Diagram 2 Press strip open.


2. Square off ends of sashing border for each flag unit.


Repeat for 56 flags using 1” strips.


3. Rotate the flag units 90˚.


4. Sew a 1½” strip to the top of flag units. Press strip open.


5. Square off ends of sashing border for each flag unit. Diagram 3

7. Sew a third 1½” strip to the side (including top sashing) of flag units. Press open.


Repeat for all 56 flag blocks. Diagram 4


8. Square off ends of third sashing border for each flag unit.


9. Rotate flag unit 90˚.


10. Sew a 2½” sashing strip to the bottom side of flag block. Press final strip open.


Repeat the same process with all 56 flag blocks. Diagram 5


11. Square all 56 flag blocks to 6½” square.
