Sloop Tavern Yacht Club Announces Inaugural ‘Triple Sound’

The Sloop Tavern Yacht Club is

pleased to announce the inaugural “Triple Sound” sailboat race series, a contest that will be awarded based on combined cumulative scores from three of the club’s short-handed races. The Race to the Straits will be on May 7-8, Down the Sound will be August 7-8 and the Jack and Jill race will be September 11. Each of the three races will include

both Jack and Jill (male and female) and double-handed classes to allow all interested competitors to participate in the shorthanded series. The three races that will make up the Triple Sound vary in both distance and direction, but all are limited to only single or doubled-handed crews. More information can be found at www.styc.org

STYC & SBYC Ballard Cup

The fun continues on Monday

evenings as the popular and lower stress Ballard Cup attracts the usual crowd of fun seekers, along with a few neophytes. Series two gets underway starting May 23. Subsequent races follow each Monday night through June 27, followed by an awards party at the Sloop. FS and NFS divisions are available, and cruisers are welcome. For those looking for a ride, we

have arranged a pick-up location where skippers in need can meet with available crew. The rendezvous point is at the dinghy dock at the north end of the Marina - be there around 5:30, gear in hand and give a hearty hail as the boats go by.

STYC “Three Buoy Fiasco” (formerly Spring Race) May 14

The First Annual Three Buoy Fiasco

is right around the corner and there is still time to sign up. STYC and PMYC are collaborating to make this an event to remember. Starting off Shilshole there will be three marks (Halverson Buoy, West Point Buoy, & Point Jefferson Buoy). The start line may be crossed in either direction. Each boat may choose which order and direction to round each mark, plus the finish line may even be crossed in either direction. Racers will start based on their PHRF rating in a pursuit style format. A cruising boat class has been added for those not currently holding a PHRF rating (a provisional rating will be provided and can even factor in those extra pounds of gear). In addition to awards within each class, a friendly EAST vs. WEST competition has been created. Boats from each side of the Puget Sound will be competing against each other for additional bragging rights and new perpetual trophy. PMYC is helping recruit West side boats, so good turn out is expected. Please come out for the fun and support your side of the sound. A party will be held immediately after racing at Ballard Sails next to the Shilshole West Marine. Burgers and beer will be provided, plus you’re encouraged to bring a side dish to share. Go to www.styc.org for more information or to register.

The largest and most storied sailboat

racing tour in the United States, the Sperry Top-Sider NOOD (National Offshore One Design) Regatta series, is set to arrive in Seattle, on May 20-22. Seattle is the fourth stop on the eight-city tour, with roughly 1,000 sailors hitting the waters of Puget Sound to contend for the event’s top prize – a trip to the British Virgin Islands to compete in the Sperry Top-Sider NOOD Championships. The overall winner in Seattle will

be invited to participate in the Sperry Top-Sider NOOD Championships in the British Virgin Islands at the end of the season to compete aboard Sunsail 39s against the other overall winners in the 2011 series. Last year, Michael Johnson of

Edmonds, WA, finished in first place in the J/24 boat class to claim the overall win on Puget Sound. Johnson and crew are expected to defend their title at the 2011 regatta. The 2011 Sperry Top-Sider Seattle

NOOD Regatta, co-hosted by the Seattle Yacht Club and Corinthian Yacht Club, will feature three days of racing for keelboats, while centerboard classes are only scheduled to participate on Saturday and Sunday, May 21 & 22. For more information on the 2011
