Letters Sucia Island Volunteerism Rocks! I had the pleasure of sailing over to Sucia this past
weekend from our homeport of Blaine... arrived 10pm Thursday night in a blow, anchored safely in the dark. Woke up the next morning to see the magnificant new “A” float at the head of Fossil Bay - stout galvanized dolphins corralling the 176’ of new hi-tech e-friendly dock made of plastic flotation, fiberglass porous decking, treated bulwarks and galvanized rails... the most amazing upgrade was the impressive “wheelchair accessible” ramp up to the landing - two stage massive aluminum gangways separated by a tidal float to reduce the angle of the ramps! Plus, just to the south of the ramp - a dingy dock section to accommodate an incredible flotilla!! Very impressive.
After the morning coffee and a walkabout, stumbled
across a crew of gentlemen at the Fossil Bay shelter dealing with the winter’s storm damage to one of the big sliding doors... without being prompted, these members from the Orcas Island Yacht Club gathered and tackled the job at hand - removing the damaged door and transferring the good one from the back side of the shelter. Thanks to the skippers and crew from MV Pipedream, MV Tenacious, MV Gadzooks, MV Mei Wenti and MV Perigree. It’s nice to see the Yacht Clubs in the region step up to maintain and improve the legacy left by previous members. This jewel in the San Juans gets a ton of traffic, and yields innumerable memories to its visitors. The past (and present) members of the International
Yacht Club implemented the first private / public partnership with Washington State Parks a few years ago - donating some $30,000 to make that shelter a reality. It’s nice to see - and acknowledged - that many hands have contributed as well. Fair winds,
INTERNATIONAL YACHT CLUB Norm, Port Captain S/V Katrina MIst
