The Sidney North Saanich Yacht

Club’s 30th anniversary of the Patos Island Classic found a fleet of 33 assembled at the Sidney starting line on Saturday, March 26, at 11:00 am. Nineteen vessels chose the long course, with the balance selecting the shorter ‘round Morseby Island course or the day course. A brisk northeast breeze provided a

spinnaker start and a spectacular vista for those viewing from on shore as the major fleet sped down Sidney Channel towards the mark at Beaumont Shoals, just east of Victoria’s Cadboro Point. After rounding the mark, a wind

shift provided a favourable opportunity to make progress up Haro Strait and take advantage of tidal currents. All went well until the approach to Turn Point on Stuart Island and the entrance to Boundary Pass when the wind slackened and tidal currents delayed easterly progress to Patos Island. The majority of the fleet headed towards the South Pender Island to “rock hop” along the shore before crossing Plumper Sound to run along the south shore of Saturna Island. The winds were variable, but

strengthened as the fleet approached Patos Island and decisions had to be made whether to round the Island to port or starboard, always an option on this rounding. In the darkness and dodging large commercial traffic, the fleet was further challenged on the return legs back to the finish line. The first racers completed the course just after midnight on Sunday morning. First across the line was Kairos, Ron

Jewula's Aerodyne 38. The corrected time winner was Eric Jespersen's Ross 930, Emma. A great crowd assembled at the

Sidney North Saanich Yacht Club during the afternoon and through the wee hours of the morning, viewing input from the computer driven SPOT, transponder results on the big screen TV. The visual representations on the screen provided active commentary as we viewed each competing vessel, their position, speed and course. SNSYC thanks the co- operation of the Royal Victoria Yacht Club and the Swiftsure organization for supplying and operating this high tech addition to the race. Nine southern B.C. yacht clubs

participated in this, the first of this year’s Triple Crown of local races, which

Sidney North Saanich Yacht Club’s Patos Island Classic

culminates with the Swiftsure Race later, in May. Canadian, Olympian sailboat racers,

Eric Jespersen and Ross McDonald, both aboard Emma, provided a benchmark and challenge for other skippers and crew who performed with near-equal skills when results were tabulated. No serious incidents were reported

during the race and there were no protests to mar the results. Strong tidal movement and a calm wind saw the short, day course abandoned several hours after the start. The medium, ‘round Morseby Island course had five determined finishers.

participants were widespread…for the professionalism of the SNSYC race committee and dedicated volunteers who provided stellar services afloat and ashore. The midnight/Sunday morning chili feast hosted at the Club has become one of the many traditions that welcomed weary sailors back to the Club’s dock and clubhouse.
