Wisconsin’s Adult Community Musical Performing Groups

Tom Heninger, WMEA State Chair, Adult Music Education

Hello, my name is Tom Heninger and I am excited to be a new member of the WMEA Council, serving as chair and advocate for adult music education.

The last person to

hold this position was Jan Tweed and she laid a tremendous groundwork that can be seen by going to www.wmeamusic. org and clicking on “Community Music Groups” in the left-side navigation bar. Contained at the site are resources on: Goals of Community Music Groups, How and Why Groups are Formed, Recruitment and Maintaining/Increasing Membership, Financial and Management, Rehearsal and Performance Schedules, Community Music Organization Highlights and last but certainly not least a List of Mentors for Community Music Groups.

I encourage you to visit the site, and applaud Jan for a job well done. So, where do we go from here? Our state is fortunate to have many very fine com- munity music groups. They exist in a myriad of differing schedules and with many differing performance venues. Many times they are not limited to just adults but include youth musicians as well. As a next step, our hope is to begin collect- ing information for a statewide directory of performance based community music groups. This resource will eventually contain the type of group (string orches- tra, choir etc.), admission procedure (age, audition), membership fees, performance schedule, rehearsal information (where, when, how long), director and contact information. We would like to post this information on the WMEA web site. With this kind of resource, a musician relocat- ing into a community could gain valuable information about musical opportunities available to them.

Performance groups will be the starting point and in the future an inventory of music classes and other music resources could also be made available to the public.

Again I am excited about the possibilities and would love to hear from you! Please visit www.wmeamusic.org and download/ submit the adult community musical performing groups information gather- ing sheet (also linked here in the online digital version of WSM). You can help by sharing what you know about groups in your area.
