listening project

Boardman, Barbara Andress, Mary Hoff- man and many more of the greatest minds in music education. I got involved in the WMEA Listening Project, which led to my passion for designing active listen- ing lessons for my students and sharing my passion and ideas with my students and other educators. With hard work and help and inspiration from my mentors, I became the successful music educator I am today.

Here is my advice for building and sustain- ing a great career as a music educator:

• Never stop learning. It isn’t fair for you or your students.

• Don’t be afraid to ask for help. There are many fabulous music edu- cators in Wisconsin ready, willing and able to share their ideas with you.

• Attend the Wisconsin State Music Conference. It is a great place to meet and network with fellow mu- sic educators, attend workshops by nationally known clinicians, share ideas, socialize and keep up with the latest ideas in music and education. (The free stuff at the exhibits is also a plus.)

• Use WMEA resources like the Listening Project, which gave me hundreds of wonderful lessons, Wisconsin Center for Music Educa- tion workshops, Comprehensive Musicianship through Performance (CMP) materials and workshops.

• Join a professional music orga- nization MENC, WMEA, WCDA, AOSA, OAKE, WBDA to name a few.

• If you get discouraged (and you probably will), hang in there.

• Remember that your music class may be the only happy part of a child’s day.

• Remember why you became a music teacher.

• Remember how you were inspired by your music teacher.

As a native Minnesotan, I am thrilled to return to my roots! At The College of

St. Scholastica, I have joined an extremely talented music faculty and am greeted by a long history of quality musicianship and exceptional teaching. It is my goal to build upon this

strong tradition by providing students with musical outlets that encourage them to recognize beauty, understand excellence and to pursue creative inspiration.
