WSMA News x WSMA Music Showcases Held at the Wisconsin State Fair

Plans are underway for the WSMA World Music Showcase held on August 12 and the Marching Band Showcase held on August 14 in conjunction with the 2011 Wisconsin State Fair. Bring your group and be the Grand Champion of Summer at the Wisconsin State Fair held in West Allis.

WSMA World Music Showcase

The WSMA World Music Showcase will be held on the World Café Stage on August 12 and is open to ensembles of all types as a celebration of world music. Recent performances have included hand bell ensembles, string quartets, Celtic ensembles, jazz ensembles, flute choirs and more. Each ensemble selected to perform will receive free admission to the fair for students and directors as well as performance time on the World Café Stage. Groups have already accepted this oppor- tunity, but there is always room for more!

Marching Band Showcase

The Marching Band Showcase is a unique op- portunity to bring your band to the fair, perform for an appreciative crowd, participate in an educational experience, reward students and be evaluated by marching band professionals. As participants in this event, students receive free access to the fair as well as the opportunity to per- form on the State Fair Mainstage. Directors and students will receive written and verbal feedback and an attractive participation plaque. Starting at 3 p.m., the Marching Band Showcase will be an exciting event for all involved.

New for 2011 – Fundraise for Your School! Groups participating in the Marching Band Show- case can purchase a combination State Fair and Grandstand ticket for $13 to sell to their fans for up to the $17 face value of the tickets. The band then retains the profit from ticket sales. This is a great fundraiser for music programs as well as an opportunity to perform.

x Festival Marching Band Class

The festival marching band class, held in conjunction with the WSMA State Marching Band Championships, is designed to allow marching bands an op- portunity to perform in a non-competitive atmosphere and still get feedback from qualified marching adjudicators. The format is much like a traditional concert festival in that there are three adjudicators giving traditional ratings using a WSMA rubric form designed for marching band. The only difference is that each adjudicator is responsible for one performance area (music, visual and effect) but just like concert festivals each individual adjudicator rating is combined into a composite rating.

The WSMA State Marching Band Championships will be held on Satur- day, October 15. If you would like more information, please contact Tim Wurgler by email at twurgler@wsmamusic.org or call the WSMA office at 1-800-589-9762.
