comprehensive musicianship through performance

strategies for skill outcomes, your students will want to continue to improve on their instruments. When students understand the knowledge, or intellectual components of a piece, an awareness of its form for in- stance, of the composer’s background, the context of the piece in history, or simply how to count that tricky rhythm, the prac- tices both at home and in class are more likely to be fruitful. But where the music comes to life and grabs the imagination and passion of the student, the teacher and the audience is in the less quantifiable and more intangible affective outcome… the “feelingful” part of the music… that which draws us to the art. Teachers can and do

design plans with specific attention to the affective. Objectives can be determined, strategies can be sculpted and molded, delivered and even assessed to create in the classroom those moments when the students feel a connection to the music, to the composer, to the community, can find a part of themselves projected through the voice of their instrument, turning the black and white dots on the page into color, texture and timbre that moves us both obviously and subtly.

Speaking of the journey from black and white to color, some of our motivators can cross over from the extrinsic to the

intrinsic. Some do not lie squarely in one category or the other, and we may argue over some of them – for instance, grades? But again, we can all agree that we want to journey away from the sticker chart, and towards the goosebumps on your arms at that spot right before the end of the second movement. After all, “music is what feelings sound like.” (I’ll take “Unknown Authors” for $1,000, Alex).
