Be valid and be credible – students, par- ents, community members, fellow staff and administration have to see you as a person who means what you say, follows through on expectations and is a com- mitted advocate for your program and students. Work collaboratively with your administration and board of education to create and fulfill expectations for your program.


You get back what you put in – no one ever fully realizes the amount of time needed to create a program of excellence.


Know and use the resources at your disposal – you are a member of WMEA and your school is a member of WSMA. Both organizations are in place to sup- port you.


Q: What is the key ingredient that you see in all successful teachers?


A: Passion! I know it will sound cliché, but if you do not love what you are doing find another profession. Your students will notice and as much as you may try to hang on, your teaching will suffer. Your students don’t care what you know; they want to know that you care. Your atten- tion to detail that comes from this passion and doing all the little things in support of your students and program will make all the difference.


Q: How do you foresee music working with the common core standards and what will be the role of music as business and education call for more imagination, creativity and innovation?


A: This question cannot be addressed without thanking Mel Pontius for his years of service and dedication to the arts in Wisconsin. Anyone who has ever met Mel and had the opportunity to speak with him regarding creativity and the arts is a more knowledgeable person for the time spent with him. Mel’s passion for music educa- tion and creativity are to be applauded and

in stating this I doubt that I will do Mel justice in what follows.


It goes without saying. Music, like all areas and offerings will be vital to the implementation and continued support of the common core standards. For those who believe that it is solely the responsi- bility of the math, English/language arts and science teachers and their respective departments to get these standards aligned and delivered to students are gravely mis- taken. The importance of integrating such standards to all subject areas is evident and supported by research. There are many resources you can access to learn more about the vital relationship between the common cores and the arts, such as the MENC web site, www.menc.org. Over the years, opportunities to use the arts to create avenues for students to improve achievement across curriculums have been missed. Terms such as “career ready” and “college ready” have become the norm and as teachers and administrators rush to create opportunities to “think” across the curriculum, many fail to acknowledge that creativity and innovation are at the heart of music education. Music students pos- sess three qualities that I believe will be at the forefront of preparing students for the 21st


century – the ability to manage time,


work independently and be a self-directed learner. Don’t forget that technology is just a tool and that a nurturing relation- ship between a student and a teacher, accompanied by high standards and rigor, with a quality assessment piece will due more to prepare students for the changes in innovation. At a time where we are no longer bound by the four walls of tradi- tional classrooms and begin to become “open schools” we must avoid “flavor of the month” thinking when incorporating technology, and remember that the learner must remain at the center of innovation.
