band

Go to each other’s concerts, team teach, piggy back clinicians, have all band instructors teach beginners and lessons for all ages.

• Occasionally ask yourself, “If I were a teenager, would I want to be in this band?”

• Push private lessons; create a list for parents/students as a resource.

• Take pictures. Put together a slide show at the end of the year, and put articles in the local paper with pictures.

• Take your bands and jazz ensembles out to elementary schools and into the community. Promote and show off – show your kids you are proud of them.

• Encourage kids to attend camps. Provide scholarships and other ways for them to earn money for camp (bagging at grocery stores, car wash, etc.).

• Encourage participation in local honors and state honors.

• Attend festivals, band and jazz (literature, camaraderie, networking – for you and your students).

• Work on at least one piece every year that you and your group have no business doing.

• Be the first person to share good news with a parent.

Beyond the Music

Today you’re telling Jack to practice his music and stop talking in class; tomorrow he will accept his Eagle Scout award and give you a mentor pin to recognize how you’ve shaped the person he’s become.

Remember that even on your worst day, you and the unique subject you teach are a child’s best hope.

Standing Strong – Together.

I cannot predict what will be happening or what the state of affairs will be when this issue of WSM comes out in April. Maybe

things will have stabilized; maybe people will be feeling better; maybe people will be feeling worse. All I can say with cer- tainty is, now is the time to pull together, help each other and be unified in our passion for and belief in what we do. We need to share ideas, successes/failures and resources and communicate support for one another.

Note: I welcome more sharing of ideas. Please send them to my email address below.
