Donald J. Chesebro Donald J. Chesebro, 76, a Stevens Point native, passed away on November 17, 2010 in Wisconsin Rapids. Chesebro was a music teacher for 35 years in Wisconsin Rapids School District after serving in the U.S. Army and earning both his bachelor of arts and graduate degrees. He was married to Marlene Jensen. Chesebro directed the Wisconsin Rapids City Band, wrote many musical arrangements and was inducted into the Polka Hall of Fame.


Gerald F. Darrow Gerald F. Darrow, 78, of Platteville, passed away on May 16, 2010. Darrow studied music education as an undergraduate at Mansfield College and pursued a master’s degree at Indiana University where he met his wife, Sarah Brown. He taught at UW-Platteville for 32 years and founded the University/ Community Orchestra, the Platteville Chorale and Children’s Choir, Platteville Summer Music Festival and Madrigal Dinner. Darrow served on the Wisconsin Arts Board for 12 years after retiring from teaching.


John Lawrence Gates Emeritus John Lawrence Gates, 73, of Elkhart Lake, passed away on August 21, 2010. He performed in the UW-Madison Bands and Symphony Orchestra and received his bachelor of music and master’s degree in arranging and conducting. Prof. Gates joined the Wisconsin Air National Guard and taught bands, orchestras and jazz ensembles at high schools throughout Wisconsin and in Tucson, Arizona. He was appointed assistant director of bands at UW-Madison, directed the marching band and served as a professor at the university. Gates was a recipient of the Kaplan Excellence in Teaching Award and taught at UW-Sheboygan for nearly four decades. He was married to Susan J. Sanville.


Duane E. Grande Duane E. Grande, 78, of Sheboygan, passed away on December 4, 2010. He earned his master’s degree in music and served as the high school band director at both Crandon High School and West Allis Central High after spending time in the U.S. Army. He directed the South Milwaukee Recreation Band and repeatedly played in his church band. Grande has served as a judge for many WSMA music festivals and was a private music teacher at the Family Music Center. He was married to Beverly Kaiser for 54 years.


Robert Hansen Robert Hansen, 82, of Mosinee, passed away on October 16, 2010. He attended Northwestern University’s School of Music and received his master’s degree in music education from Columbia University. He was a U.S. Navy band member and was the band and choir director for 42 years in Mosinee School District. He was involved in church choirs and helped start the Mosinee Community Theatre. He was married to Anne Hansen.


Kenneth Schure Kenneth Schure, 72, of Sparta, passed away on November 16, 2010. He received his bachelor of science in education and was a staff member of the Interlochen Music Camp. Schure received his master’s degree from Northern Illinois University and became the instrumental instructor at Sparta Jr. High for 30 years. He received the Outstanding Young Educator Award and served a term as president of the Sparta Education Association. Schure was the choir director for Trinity Lutheran Church and Sparta Community Choir, and played in both the La Crosse Symphony and City Band. He was married to Judith A. Decker.


Charles M. Thomley Charles M. Thomley, 75, of Whitehall, passed away on January 20, 2011. Thomely received his master’s degree in choral conducting, bringing his talents to the U.S. Army. He was both a high school and church choir director, as well as a member of the Friends of the Overture Concert Organ Board, vice president of the Madison Association Musicians/ American Guild of Organists Chapter, president of the North Central Division and assistant chairman of the National ACDA Conventions. He was married to Joan R. Rasmuson.
