How f o r t u n a t e we were to have a conversation with Dr. Bennett Reimer during our Wiscon- sin Society for Music Teacher Educators (WSMTE) pre- conference meeting last October, when
we enjoyed brainstorming an ideal cur- riculum. Dr. Reimer asked us to truly examine this ideal from the standpoint of a philosophical grounding in a definition
that embraces what we would consider a perfect curriculum without regard to whether or not this curriculum could actually be obtainable. He framed our conversation conceptually and aestheti- cally within the context of two “roles” – musicianship roles and listenership roles. These roles were also presented to us as a part of a restructuring of the national content standards for music education and included, to name a few, performer, composer, theorist, critic, historian, neuroscientist, philosopher and ethnomu- sicologist.

We worked in groups and gathered our ideal curriculum offerings onto a note card and at the end of our discussion, the cards were collected. I have organized our thoughts into the following degree plan, with the assumption that freshmen would come to us having already excelled in beginning written and aural theory and in an overview course of folk and traditional music of the United States (represent- ing most musical cultures present in our country).
