“During the day the terminal building is in full use, but at say midnight only one or two gates are in use, so if we adjust the time control system, lights can be turned on only at that gate and on the route of the passenger for one hour before and after departures,” enthuses Shin.
Other energy saving initiatives introduced by Incheon Airport include the introduction of electric cars into its vehicle fleet, the introduction of 18.4km of cycle paths around the passenger terminal to encourage cycling, and joining the international ISO 14001 framework for reducing pollution. With the expansion of Incheon now in full swing, Shin is looking to introduce LEED accredited construction techniques to minimise waste.

Pollution and noise monitoring
A principal reason why Incheon was built on reclaimed land between the islands of Yeongjong and Yongyu was to minimise the impact of aircraft noise on surrounding communities, and the airport continued to look for ways to reduce its noise pollution.
Through 18 monitoring stations spread across the airport, the gateway keeps tabs on noise levels and works with key stakeholders, such as airlines, to maintain and reduce noise levels. Compared to 2009, the noise levels at Mo and Jang-Bong islands were reduced by 0.2%-2.8%.
Policies to cut exhaust fumes and restrictions on the transporting of construction materials has allowed
