OVERVIEW

where visitors can learn about and make traditional Korean handicrafts.

The design concept of Concourse A incorporates a harmony of traditional culture and cutting-edge technology, the aim being simplified passenger flow with an abundance of natural light.

“Airports are no longer places for mere transportation,” says Incheon’s president and CEO, CW Lee. “Incheon Airport is creating distinctive values that exceed customers’ expectations by providing a wide spectrum of services and excitement in such areas as logistics, business, culture, shopping, leisure, and entertainment. “Airports in the 21st Century have a mission to pursue

service excellence with artistic and functional facilities.” And the airport’s capacity will be further boosted by the 2015 opening of a new $1.4 billion terminal (Terminal 2) that will allow Incheon to handle up to 62mppa. The total will ensure that the airport has the capacity it needs to meet demand for the foreseeable future, after which further extensions to Terminal 2 could ultimately raise Incheon’s capacity to in excess of 100mppa. In terms of present day traffic development, 2010 was a good year for Incheon, with passenger numbers hitting

33.48 million (+17.5%) and cargo exceeding 2.68 million tons (+16%) to cement Incheon’s status as the region’s second busiest freight gateway after Hong Kong.

Traffic

The existence of the primarily domestic and regional air service providing Gimpo International Airport just 30km away effectively means that Incheon almost exclusively handles international flights.

In fact less than 2% of its traffic – around 450,000 passengers per annum – travel on domestic flights to cities such as Pusan, Yeosu and Muan. Transfer traffic currently accounts for 18% of all passengers, with the bulk of those transiting through Incheon originating in China, Japan and South East Asian countries. Incheon currently offers services to 35 Chinese cities and 30 destinations in Japan, and the fact that almost 95 Chinese cities are located within two hour’s flying time of Seoul means that the South Korean gateway almost acts as a domestic airport for the huge Mainland China market. Incheon’s network and catchment area ensure that Chinese nationals currently account for around 28% of all passengers passing through the airport.
