CEO VISION
Construction work on the building itself is expected to begin in 2012 and, when complete, Terminal 2 is expected to be about 70% of the size of the existing one-kilometre long main terminal building. Terminal 2 will initially raise Incheon’s capacity to 62mppa, but with further expansion in the years ahead could ultimately equip the airport to accommodate in excess of 100mppa.
In addition to T2, Incheon Airport will also invest $2.7 billion on a new cargo and logistics terminal as part of Incheon’s third phase expansion programme. The gateway will 100% fund the infrastructure development programme and Lee insists that the company’s triple A rating ensures that it can get a better rate for any bond issue than most Korean banks. The ‘globalisation’ of Incheon Airport, which is a key part of Lee’s 2011-2015 vision, has already begun with the South Korean airport operator involved in a handful of overseas projects.
They include Erbil Airport in Iraq where a team of around 30 Incheon Airport staff helped oversee the opening of the gateway and now assist with its daily operations.
The gateway is also working on developing the master plan for Mactan-Cebu International Airport in the
Philippines, and in December 2010 won the contract to provide IT design supervision and consulting services to Cambodia’s Siem Reap International Airport. It previously completed the master plan for Russia’s Khabarovsk Novy Airport in conjunction with three local companies.
And as if to prove the point that Incheon Airport is now firmly focused on the global market, in February it entered into a joint venture with China’s HNA Airport Group to provide consulting and operational services to Haikou, Sanya and Lanzhou airports.
The HNA Group is the fourth biggest airport operator in China.
Lee also admits that the airport operator is currently in negotiations with “two or three international airports” in the Asia-Pacific region about the possibility of acquiring an equity stake in them.
“Incheon Airport is now a strong and powerful brand and our success in the ASQ awards has certainly proved instrumental in helping us reach a global audience,” says Lee. “We are actively looking to export our knowledge and expertise overseas as we believe that there are many companies that would want to take advantage of what we have to offer.
