SIMPLY THE BEST

INCHEON AIRPORT EXPECTS TO CELEBRATE ITS 10TH ANNIVERSARY IN 2011 WITH RECORD TRAFFIC FIGURES, NEW SHAREHOLDERS AND AN OPEN AIR CONCERT ATTENDED BY 10,000 PEOPLE.

I

n just 10 years, Incheon Airport has grown from a new, greenfi eld gateway on the outskirts of Seoul into one of Asia’s biggest and most successful hubs. The airport’s “beautiful” design, state-of-art IT systems and customer friendly facilities immediately made it a favourite with passengers.

While hub carriers Asiana and Korean Air and all the other airlines making the switch from Gimpo International Airport appreciated the new levels of operational effi ciency offered by the $5.6 billion gateway.

When it opened on March 29, 2001, South Korea’s new gateway to the world boasted a giant one kilometre-long passenger terminal, two 3,750-metre parallel runways and three cargo terminals.

The gleaming new facilities meant that the airport was capable of handling 27 million passengers, 170,000 aircraft movements and up to 1.7 million tons of cargo per annum – capacity that Gimpo could only dream about. At 496,000sqm, the 44-gate terminal spans six fl oors and remains the largest single building ever constructed in South Korea.

The facilities welcomed a total of 14.5 million passengers, 1.2 million tons of cargo and 86,839 fl ights in 2001 and the

figures soared to 20.9 million passengers, 126,000 aircraft movements and 1.7 million tons of cargo in 2002, its first full-year of operations.

Indeed, when its annual throughput exceeded 24mppa as early 2004, it became apparent to operator, Incheon Airport, that the planned second phase expansion programme would have to be moved forward a few years to avoid the airport becoming a victim of its own success.

The addition of a new midfield concourse (Concourse A), third runway (4,000 metres) and an extra 13-hectare cargo terminal area in 2008 raised Incheon’s annual capacity to 44 million passengers, 410,000 aircraft movements and 4.5 million tons of freight. Covering 16.5 hectares, Concourse A has 33 gates, 60 parking positions for passenger and cargo aircraft and is linked to the main terminal 1.1 kilometres away by an automated people mover operating inside an underground tunnel. Passenger-friendly facilities in the new concourse include Internet lounges, massage and saunas, a children’s playroom, storage lockers, Transit Hotel and a Korean Traditional Cultural Experience Centre
