Silence is golden
THE 174 rooms and suites of the newly restored Radisson Edwardian Kenilworth Hotel, previously known as The Marlborough, feature Selectaglaze secondary glazing following the hotel’s a £25m transformation. Situated in the heart of London, sound insulation was critical. Selectaglaze was asked to consider a number of designs for the hotel’s traditional sash windows and trials were undertaken to establish acoustic effectiveness and ease of operation. The preferred solution is a pair
of linked hinged casements each covering one of the window sashes and glazed with toughened glass for the safety of guests. The units, incorporating high
compression seals, reduce noise levels by more than 40dB and the opening arrangement allows access to entire window, which is important for cleaning. Other benefits include the elimination of drafts and much reduced heat loss through the window.

The £20m racecourse redevelopment
involved the construction of a new grandstand with 1,000sq m of betting, conference and exhibition facilities
Grandstand glazing solutions
CURTAIN walling, windows and doors from architectural aluminium systems supplier Kawneer have been installed at Epsom racecourse’s new grandstand. Kawneer’s AA100 dry-jointed curtain walling and 451PT thermal framing system were installed at all levels of the hospitality facilities. It’s AA601 integrated casement windows feature in multiple locations, its patio doors in the second floor hospitality boxes, and its series 350 severe-duty commercial entrance doors in main entrances and public spaces. “A number of different glazed systems
were required for the grandstand, including large amounts of curtain walling, to allow superb viewing over the racetrack and surrounding countryside, sliding door systems to provide level access from boxes to viewing balconies and robust glazed doors generally to cater for the large numbers of public passing through the main hospitality areas,” says Aled Roberts, associate director at Roberts Limbrick. The glazing systems had to achieve minimal frame sizes, meet stringent thermal performance levels and be appropriately robust for the highly exposed location on top of Epsom Downs.
