Reality bites

WELCOME to the first issue of 2011. This is the year that the government cuts will really start to be felt, so what can we expect over the next 12 months? Public sector cuts mean that many local authority leisure schemes will fail to see the light, and others will need private sector partners to take them forward.

Let’s Dance

This is the new home of Northern Ballet and Phoenix Dance Theatre. The £12m centre in Leeds includes seven dance studios, including a 230-seat studio theatre and the largest dance rehearsal space outside of London. Designed by Strategic Design Alliance, other facilities include a health suite, a public exhibition and café.

Overall however, the prospects for the leisure construction sector are positive according to industry analysts Glenigan (page 17). The Olympics, which has played a crucial role in the sector, will continue to underpin sector output as work continues and we will keep you updated on the progress of the Games throughout the year. But the Olympics have not been the only source of growth. The number of hotel projects starting on site has also increased, and there are signs that private sector confidence is returning.
