Crowne Plaza’s crowning glory

CAREA provided the cladding for Manchester’s first bespoke Crowne Plaza Hotel. Designed by architects Leach Rhodes Walker and built by Carillon, the hotel‘s triangular plan form creates a unique internal arrangement. Crucial to its external aesthetic is a marked contrast between the two main façades. To achieve this, designers specified Carea basalt stone effect cladding on the building’s southern façade and decorative glass on the northern face of the building. To fix the Carea cladding panels in

place, a support system from Eurofox Engineering was specified. Made from aluminium, to meet the architect’s environmental ambitions for the scheme, they meet the common European regulations for hung ventilated façades. Offered in a variety of panel sizes, the panels are matched by a selection of joints and fittings. They also provide several performance benefits including a high degree of insulation and acoustic insulation to limit disturbance to guests of the city central hotel.

An uninterrupted facade

ARCHITECTS wanted to create a facade of rugged, yet elegant granite cladding for the exterior of Glasgow’s CitizenM hotel. Created by Concrete Architectural Associates, the building features full height windows set in a dark granite cladding, to keep it in tune with its Scottish environment. To ensure that cladding fixings did not spoil the aesthetic, SikaTack Panel Adhesive was specified. SikaTack Panel Adhesive bonds cladding

to support systems, eliminating the need for screws and bolts. It was specified for the project following tests by Tiles

International, which supplied the granite tiles, to determine the best fixing method. Ranging in sizes up to 1,200 mm x 900 mm, the tile were fixed onto prefabricated aluminium support rails and angles attached to the structure of the building. The adhesive is suitable for a wide range of cladding types, including composites, ceramics, high pressure laminates and cement based materials, and its elasticity allows for any natural movement in the building, reducing stress on the cladding.
