Modern sustainability


A NEW coaching and performance facility has launched, the first of its type in Wales to be awarded a BREEAM excellent rating. The University of Glamorgan coaching and performance facility, designed by Holder Mathias and built by Midas Construction, includes a multi-purpose sports hall with six courts and an ancillary support block, a strength and conditioning lab for elite training, a lecture and meeting room, as well as a teaching facility. The £3.7m facility, based at


Glamorgan Sport Park, has been built by Midas Construction on the university’s existing playing fields and designed in accordance with Sport England guidelines. Its BREEAM Excellent rating was


awarded for the use of super-efficient gas fired boilers, natural daylight and ventilation, along with A/A+ rated specification throughout, and forms part of the university’s continued strategy for responsible sustainable investment. Features include of glass-backed badminton courts which create the sense of an open sports hall while, enabling spectators and coaches to see activity going on at a ground level.

The university is an official training camp for the Olympic Games Maximising sports excellence


ADP is months away from completing a £15m sports centre that will provide indoor training areas in time for the run up to the 2012 Olympics. The Sir Tom Finney Sports Centre is designed to maximise the sporting experience for students at the University of Central Lancashire, and as such facilities include a gym, eight-court sports hall, squash court, aerobics and activity rooms, and studio. The centrepiece of the development will be a sprung timber sports hall, sunk into


the centre of the plan, with more than 300 retractable seats and a viewing gallery. The centre will provide large, flexible spaces for conferences and exhibitions. Included within the overall scheme is a


90 place nursery that forms a single storey building assembled around a central atrium. The building links to an external play area bound by a perimeter wall. The facility is on course to achieve a BREEAM Excellent rating.
