Stratford City will create a new metropolitan
centre for east London to act as a gateway to the 2012 Olympic Games.
EUROPE’S largest urban shopping centre is on track to open this September in London’s East End, the scene of arguably Britain’s most ambitious urban regeneration programme. At 1.9 million sq ft, Westfield Stratford City will form the imposing gateway to London’s Olympic Park. The expansive mix of major brand retail and leisure spread over a three-level mall will form a major destination for tourists and locals alike. Visit London forecasts that the London 2012 Games will contribute an additional £1.3 - £2.2bn to London tourism between 2007 and 2017. Just 20 minutes from the capital’s central attractions and at the heart of the Olympic site, Westfield Stratford City is strongly positioned to maximise on this opportunity and is also a core component of east London’s Olympic legacy. An ‘innovative fusion of different brands,
experiences and formats’ will grace the multi-tiered mall and a 24-hour lifestyle street. Art and culture will prove integral to the experience; from the striking architecture of individual retail districts to new retail concepts, cultural collaborations, events and installations that will enhance what is described as the next generation of retail space. Westfield Stratford City is set to
transform London’s retail landscape and will be one of the best connected transport hubs in Britain, girdled by major over- and underground rail links, bus routes, even cycle links. The masterplan embraces a number of mixed-use districts next to the transport hubs of Stratford Regional Station and Stratford International Station. It is being developed over several years for staged completion and release, with Phase One scheduled to open in September 2011.
