THE GUESTLIST NETWORK | JANUARY / FEBRUARY 2011 IC3

Yo! How’s it going? All good.

You are always mad busy and are constantly playing gigs every week. When do you get a chance to chill? Well after doing so many raves every week and gigs I usually pick one day to chill. It depends on gigs so I would probably say either a Sunday or Monday where I will have a complete non-music day. Just one day at least of silence etc. so I can just chill and switch off.

You’ve been in the game for a while and kicking off with your use of airwaves and Transition 1 built you a mas- sive fan base. How did it all start for you? Yeah it’s been a bit of a journey into the scene but great, to be honest when I started on Trans- mission 1 Radio Station it was more of hobby, and was based in West London where I’m from. I started a style of MCing which was known as a West London way of MCing, talking the lingo and everything. I suppose my name got built from there in terms of the local boy rising and the locals supporting in terms of fans. I would say it really all kicked off from when I joined Kool FM. It was a whole different ball game, having to adapt to different types of DJ sets and obviously a larger audience began to hear me. From there I would say the fan base began.

Why do you go by the name of IC3. What’s the meaning behind this? I’m called IC3 because as a kid I got stopped a lot by police and IC3 means black male. It’s code for the colour of your skin when police do a check on you. For example; “...we a have an IC3 male”, IC1 is white.

You also go by your DJ El Matadore alias and play house sets, is this something you have always wanted to get into aside from DnB? Well the whole El Matadore thing began as a hobby. I actually wanted to DJ before I became an MC we used to practice in my mates house every weekend after football training. I used to work part-time in a record shop so I used to practice DJing there loads so from my hobby its now turned into a bit of a side project. It’s also something I do in my spare time, also the production side of House in which I work with Inch from Control Z the Break Beat act.

I’ve heard that sets with your partner in crime Mampi Swift are always high energy, who else is on your wish list of

Tab Tayor

One of DnB’s biggest characters his sets are always a high energy extravaganza! We caught up with IC3 to talk legends, the launch of El Matadore Records and fun in the sun!

CHASE & STATUS Album Review

After their breakthrough in the yester- year, the boys are back with their new and vigorous album, ‘No More Idols’. They made a name for themselves last year as their 2008 album ‘More Than Alot’ made a slow but steady way into the album charts, and with the collaboration with Plan B in ‘End Credits’, the plaudits went the way of Saul (Chase) Milton and Will (Status) Kennard. Let’s not forget the classic ‘Streetlife’ track that is a Guestlist favourite. Tune! With a host of established artists from different backgrounds such as Dizzee Rascal, Cee Lo Green and White Lies bringing a piece of their exuberance to the table. ‘No More Idols’ shows it’s diversity and expresses how Chase & Status have evolved into music mavericks. Key tracks include the soul inspired ‘Midnight Caller’ featuring 2011 hot tip Claire Maguire and rightly titled ‘Highest Hype’ featured Tempa T. No More Idol is released on the 31st of January.

BLAME Set Me Free

Drum N Bass DJ Blame has a real gem in his hands. Adding American R&B legend Jocelyn Brown’s excellent vocals to the recipe, ‘Set Me Free’ mixes R&B and DnB with ease. The rapid song will get you jumping up and down from the hype and puts you in the mood for a good night out. Blame has been on the scene for a number of years and his potential is showing through in this track.

people to work with? Yes I perform a lot with Mampi Swift I’ve also performed a lot recently with DJ Hype, also of the Ram Records guys from doing Ram nights also most recently Rockwell, Icicle and Alex Perez on Shogun also Sigma. I have no preferred DJ I like to work with the full spectrum of DnB, I feel it brings out my versatility which makes me diverse.

You have travelled and played all over the world where’s been one of your favorites? Yes recently in the last 6 months I’ve travelled loads they’ve all been good. To name a few I’d say one of the best nights was Perth Australia, it truly was a good night, vibes from start to end from the performance with Mampi Swift. Wow, I can’t explain too much you just had to be there it was really good the whole tour of Australia and New Zealand was good.

What’s the craziest thing a fan has done to get your at- tention? I’m sure there have been a few!

I guess I haven’t had that many crazy things happen to me from a fan wanting my attention. I think the funniest and strangest is when they shout your real name or say have you got a cousin called so and so bang in the middle of a rave.

Who is your D&B legend? My DnB legend without doubt is Stevie Hyper D for many reasons.

We can’t wait until Innovation In The Sun, gonna be heavy! You must have a lot of fun be- ing involved with it every year. Innovation is always fun ‘cause its not just the rave at night it’s the activities in the day from the pool party to the football comp I run and also the boat partys there’s so much to do, hence the phrase fun in the sun.

When and where are you at your happiest?

Happiest when I pray and when my environment around me is happy which brings a positive atmosphere.

If you were invisible for the day what trouble would you get upto?

If I were invisible for the day at the moment, I would go into Chelsea FC training ground or dressing room and I’d like to know why we’re playing not so good at the moment.

What’s next for you this year? This year I would say more of the same and also from the manage- ment, also getting an IC3 and friends tour night on the road around the UK, also look out for the launch of El Matadore Recs later this year!

Check out IC3 at Chibuku @ The Masque/ 5th Feb, with DJ Hype, Annie Mac & James Blake

Previously holding their weekly Wednesday night residency at The Den (formally known as The End). The Some Night team has said; ‘The move in venues is due to the fact that The Den restricted them from providing the friendly and unique clubbing experience that they set out to achieve’.
