THE GUESTLIST NETWORK | JANUARY / FEBRUARY 2011 N-TYPE
You have had quite a history in pirate radio stations and presenting underground chart shows. How was all that grow- ing up? It was wicked man. I’ve always loved pirate radio, even since I was a kid. It was good to be a part of it and I’ve always enjoyed it, it’s sick.
You still doing it now? Yeah still doing it now. I’ve got my radio show on Rinse FM, every Tuesday from 9 til 11. Just working with the Wheel and Deal team at the minute, that’s my label. I’ve got another label as well with Hatcher called Sin City. Rinse blew me up world wide because they have some sick brands there who really know how to push people. I did a Dubstep Allstars mix and I did a Rinse mix and those things there just kind of blew up. It was the right time as well because it was when the press were getting on to Dubstep. That’s how I got to where I am now.
You hit the studio with Coki, Youngster, Benga, Walsh, Seven. What was it like work- ing with all of these guys? The whole thing with that is they are all my friends, I’ve known them for a long time. I always liked to make tunes myself and I started in 2004 making Grimey Garagey tunes. I got a lot of work from doing DJing and stuff and I also had a full time job so I didn’t have a lot of time in the studio. I started making my own tunes but I also wanted to link up with people that have created the tunes I love, and that’s why I did all of these combinations.
Will that album be coming out this year? Yeah it should be coming out this year but it’s going to be later this year. It’s because I’ve got a proj- ect with Lemon D. When I first started I was playing Jungle and Drum n Bass and buying Garage. When I got into the making of Dubstep, it was a combination of Jungle, Grime, 2 Step and a bit of Hip Hop and Reggae. I was in Dubstep before it was called Dubstep, we used to call it Dark Garage.
Is that going to be N-Type and Lemon D?

Multi Award winning producer/ DJ N-Type is the man when it comes to new artists in Dubstep. Co- owner of Sin City Reords and Wheel and Deal Records we wanted to get the scoop on the new kids on the block.
Joanne Bristowe & Joe Le Groovehi
We got an alias name but I don’t want to say it just yet.
Your going to save it then? Everyone knows we’re working together but I just want to see if anyone can clock the produc- tion when it comes through. The album is looking so sick. I’m really happy with it. It got all my influences, all the things I loved in there. You got different tempos, different sounds, you got vocals. I haven’t worked a lot of vocals in my time, I’ve only done a few vo- cal remixes. Never actually been part of writing lyrics and recording stuff. So its been a really exciting project for me. I’m even working on it today.
You joined forces with DJ Hatcher to form Sin City in Shoreditch. Did you ever have expectations from it? None of this stuff that I’ve ever done had a plan and it’s been big. We just do things we want to do. Hatcher always wanted to do raves so we started it. Sin City was first a garage night in Croy- don’s Cro Bar. Then we moved it around about in Croydon, then we moved it up to Bar Rumba then to Herbal to Plan B. Now we’ve moved it to Fabric. The first one is on the 28th of January.
You’re a multi award winning Dubstep producer, owner of Wheel and Deal records and co-owner of Sin City. What do you do to chill out? I don’t think I stop mate. I wake up at 8 O’clock in the morning and I work until 11 at night. The busi- ness side that nobody sees takes a lot of time, it’s not a 5 minute job. If I’m not doing that then I’m producing. Chillin’ out for me is making a tune. If I’m not doing that, I’m chilling with my girlfriend. I eat out so much. I put on about a stone in the last 5 years, I used to go gym but I haven’t been in ages. It’s supposed to be my New Year’s resolution but I haven’t put the jogging bottoms on yet. I’m super busy. I love it, it’s my life.
I see your playing my home- town of Bristol on the 15th. The line up looks lively with Mistajam, A1 Bassline and Breakage at Motion. Do you enjoy gigging outside of London?
Yeah I love it, you get different vibes everywhere you go. Bristol’s wicked and it’s going to be a sick one!
You’ve signed acts such as Coki, Walsh, Youngster, Kutzs and LV. Are you excited with all of this new talent? Yeah there’s loads of wicked talent out there. I’ve just signed these guys called Soap Dodgers who are a couple of young DJ’s and they’re making some good tunes. I can almost tell who is go- ing to be big early doors. Through their production quality and the way they are doing things you can tell how good they are going get.
Do you think there is a lack of women Dubstep acts? I’ve met quite a lot of women DJ acts worldwide. I think in any genre it’s important to have girl and boy DJ acts. It doesn’t matter if you’re a man or a woman, you need to get out there and make tunes. LV is a female producer and she makes some sick tunes.
Have you got any exclusive news for us? The ‘Wheel and Deal’ album is coming out, should be out in April. The launch party is actually on the 25th of Feb. The line up is N-Type and Youngster back to back, Chefal, Walsh, Biscuit Fac- tory Records and the Aliens with their first song Invasion. They are from London but nobody knows who they are so its going to be interesting to find out.
