Hip Hop duo Phonte Coleman and Nicolay are back with their 3rd album ‘Authenticity’ released last month. They now have a back catalogue to contend with the big boys.

J- DILLA TRIBUTE 6TH FEBRUARY

On the Doctor’s Orders, J-Dilla Changed My Life has returned for the fifth year running. This February, the show will spread from London to Brighton and for the first time ever, in Manchester. To celebrate the life of J-Dilla who sadly lost his battle with Lupus five years ago. These shows were, and still are, put on for awareness of the disease and to raise funds for The J-Dilla

You met online on the Okay Player message board and put together a whole album before you even met. How did you manage that it must have been quite mad?

At the time it didn’t seem too crazy to us, it was just working with the tools we had at the time. This was before Skype and all this technology. It was pre that, and was just the way we had to work.

Cool, who approached who to work with each other or was it just a natural thing?

It was a natural thing. I know that Phonte sent me a message after hearing one of the things that I had put up first. I’d been doing some work on some tracks and it wasn’t until a little while when I really decided to put it up online. For people hear my work because this was an online community that were very music savvy, so it was defiantly going to be a very critical crowd. That’s why it really meant a lot when people were responding to it and one of the people that were really digging it was Phonte.

Obviously you’re a Grammy nominee for the Best Urban/ Alternative Performance for ‘Day Keeper’ from your album, this must have been really ex- citing what was your reaction to the news?

It was surprising, I didn’t expect it, I don’t think any of us did. It came out of nowhere! It was a big honour we were happy to be amongst the elite. (laughs)

You were one half of Little Brother. Do you feel that your time within that group has had an influence on the music you’re making now? Yes I think it has a lot to do with it. It really gave me a background in order to appreciate what we can do with FE, and an order of un- derstanding on how to proceed.

Who would you say were your music influences?

I think we both have very eclectic tastes, we will listen to and love anything from Jazz to Rock to Soul to Radiohead to you name it. When we were recording the album that was pretty much the only thing I was listening to because it keeps you focused. Right now I’m listening to a lot of Prince and lots of 60’s and 70’s records.

What message do you hope to spread with your music? That it’s possible to do what you love and to stay true. We’ve al- ways made the music that we’ve wanted to hear.

You’ve obviously got your new album out. What can we expect from it? This album explores a lot of styles we haven’t before, a lot of Rock elements and pushed out bound- aries a bit.

When are you both at your happiest?

Probably at the end of a new song, listening back to something you’ve just created.

You guys are going to be playing in the UK in Jan and

I think its been about 5 years since you’ve been here are you looking forward to these shows? Yes we’re very excited! We get a lot of love from London and the UK as a whole. We’ve really been trying for a while to come over, it’s just taken some time.

What advice would you give to any independent artists starting out? Keep pushing and it’s in your heart keep going.

If you could go into any de- cade from music what would it be? I’d say the 70’s just being around all those amazing records.

If you were invisible for that day what would you get up to?

I’d go to the White House and see what’s really going on!

Any new years resolutions? No I don’t. I don’t even make mine til spring anyway, that’s when the real new year starts. Nobody wants to do anything in January, it’s cold its raining and stuff.

What’s new for you this year? Pushing the record and playing all the shows!

Looking forward to catching you in London!
