THE GUESTLIST NETWORK | JANUARY / FEBRUARY 2011 JOE LE GROOVE´S

dOP

Why are you called dOP? It can mean a lot of things, it’s quite funny. Sometimes we call it “Day of Payment”, or in two weeks time it means “Difference of Perception”. I’m also “Director of Photography”.

You all have input, but who does what in the band? Clement does all the percussion stuff, Damien plays various instru- ments and I (Jonathan) sing and write.

5 years ago dOP was born when 3 French childhood friends, Clement Aichelbaum,

Damien Vandesande and Jonathan Illel decided to make organic Dance Music. Since then, they have taken the world by storm with their eclectic electric sound.

What do you want to convey to crowds when you are perform- ing? We try and give something differ- ent to the clubbing scene, we want people to say, “Wow, that was different”, “That Was Trash!”.

You recently did a live per- formance at Hybrid Life, how was it? I loved it so much, the crowd where totally with us. In London we

are always happy with our gigs, but in Holland all our gigs have been shit. Like there is a black cat turn- ing around in Holland. Except last NYE, when we played at studio 80 which was the first after ten gigs, we had a good one! There were always some problems before. Whether it was a bad sound system or we played in front of a handful of people.

What influences you guys when you are producing? The biggest influence is the travel- ling, especially the music. It’s the people from different countries and all the situations that we have encountered.

What about before dOP was formed? We grew up together. Clement and I have been friends since we were 6 years old. Clement was into Jazz and I was listening to Dance Music.

What track are you feeling at the moment which is different in its approach? There is a track called ‘I Never Learnt To Share’ by James Blake, it’s one of the best tracks I have heard in the last 10 years. I love it, it’s unbelievable.

What other artists are you into outside of House and Techno? I like Das Rascist, Space Invadas with the awesome Steve Spacek and loads of other stuff. I really like the lead singer from the Noisettes, and that track called “Never Give Up”, it’s sick.

What’s clubbing like in France? I’m not really into clubbing in France, there are too many lows. The parties are usually shit, the alcohol is really expensive and the

security systems are shit. I just go to parties when I work, except at my house. The parties at my house are the best in Paris, even if there are 10 people you will have the time of your life!

Have you guys been doing solo stuff? Yeah, I’m doing my own solo proj- ect that I’m working on. Damien is DJing a lot and Clement has just built his studio in Berlin. All 3 of us have another project that will be finished in May, it will be all in French under another alias called ‘Les Fils Du Calvaire’, it means; “The Sons of the Calvary”. We are going to do one album and we won’t make any more with that project. It will come out for Christmas 2011 and we will prob- ably be touring it in Feb 2012. I’m also doing another project with 18 tracks and 18 producers. I can’t tell you too much about it but it will have all of the cream of produc- ers of right now. I’m going to take my time because I want it to be a masterpiece.

If you could travel back in time 15 years and give yourself some advice, what would it be? I would say, “wake up early and keep your hand off your dick”.

Name 3 Legends of music that you would love to work with? Michael Jackson, Nina Simone and Jim Morrison.

Is there any message you want to get out to your fans? On behalf of all of us, we would like to thank all the promoters and the people that came to the shows last year. We have had some really amazing gigs and met some really nice people. I want people to know that one day I want to be the best singer of all time in House music.

I like that, you said that with arrogance but also with so much passion. (Laughs) It’s what I want it to be, I wouldn’t say it’s arrogance... (Laughs)

At the end of the day if you want something in life you have to believe in yourself foremost. Exactly Joe, if you really want something bad enough you can have it, some people are too lazy, it’s all about hard work. There are too many depressed people who are simply just too lazy... thereyago.com/thanks.
