What are your goals for the New Year?
I think for the year ahead all I can ask for is good health for me and my family, and to be able to continue doing what I love and what I do best, which is making music and playing it to the fans.
People think of you as an accomplished scratch DJ, are you still using it in your mixes? Most definitely. I don’t scratch all the time, be- cause sometimes it just doesn’t sound right or is unnecessary. But every now and then I like to drop a little scratch in to hype up the crowd. It’s really effective and the crowds enjoy it so I am always happy to play for the crowd and whatever they need.
I read you described your music as a really juicy or- ange, bursting with fla- vour and energy. Still an orange?!
Hahaha! Man, I thought MySpace was dead! ;-D Still bursting with flavour and energy, but I think I have evolved now into a watermelon or something like that - bigger, bolder and even more goodness to share around!
You recently done a DJ Marky Jungle Set on Soundcloud as a New Year’s present for your fans! That was nice of you wasn´t it? Did you get anything nice for Xmas?
I love giving back to the fans with mixes or free mu- sic. They always support me and this is the only gift I can really give to them on a regular basis. I had a re- ally good Christmas, filled with parties and family and friends. This is the important part of Christmas, not the presents. Although I did get the keys to my new apart- ment which was unexpect- ed and the best gift anyone could have given me I think.
Who is your hot tip for 2011?
Well S.P.Y. is still going to be pushing hard this year. Also I have a good feeling about Dramatic & Dbaudio. I just signed a track from them for my label and in- cluded it on the forthcoming Fabric compilation so hope- fully the people will get the same vibe from them that I have.
I remember seeing you play at a club in Brazil a while back and the crowd were crazy! How
Tab Taylor
DJ Marky is one of the most respected and well known Drum & Bass DJ’s in the world. The Brazilian funkmaster has been playing in clubs for a quarter of a century, luckily he took some time out to tell us about his big plans for the New Year.
does the UK crowd differ to your home crowd? Every country has a different vibe when it comes to the crowds and it is these tiny differences that make every night special. The UK crowd is a lot more up to date and focused on the new music. They like it quite hard and fast on the UK rave scene, so you have to think about this when you start the sets. Back in Brazil, it is more of a general vibe with a much more social feel to it. Same music just a slightly different take on it.
Caipirinha is Brazil’s sta- ple cocktail, whats your favourite drink when your out?
I quite like a glass of cham- pagne every now and then, but my biggest danger is rum or brandy and coke. I love the stuff, but it doesn’t love me for some reason.
If you could take 3 peo- ple for dinner right now, dead or alive who would they be?!
Marvin Gaye Stevie Wonder Ella Fitzgerald Big heroes of mine growing
up.
What can we expect from 2011?
I am working on my studio album, which I hope to have finished soon. I have some releases lined up for my label and others as well as some remixes, so it should be a good and busy year. And of course, I will be tour- ing
all over, starting with
Australia in January before coming back to Europe in February for my album launch party at Fabric.
If you had a swimming pool filled with anything, what would it be?! Rum and coke.
With a champagne plunge pool next to it!
;-D
Cheers so much for your time, we hope to catch you in the UK soon.
Thanks very much!!!
You can catch DJ Marky at his album launch at Fabric on 4th February.
