THE GUESTLIST NETWORK | JANUARY / FEBRUARY 2011

Fe-Nix from left to right: Redd, Jade, Tanya and Ayshen. FE-NIX

Things must be mad hectic at the moment. With the ‘Red Light’ video shoot, finishing touches to the album for a Spring release. So let’s rewind the clock a little bit. How did the group come together? Ayshen: Myself, Jade and Tanya all originally knew each other from the beginning, and started Fe-Nix. But we wanted to bring something different to the UK, a dfferent flavour. We decided to audition for a female rapper. Originally we had another member who has now been replaced by Redd, and the rest is history really. So we’re just working really hard on our album. It’s what we’ve been concentrat- ing on!

I understand it’s an album that features some production from some very well renowned producers as well? All: Yes Tanya: We’ve got Asterix who’s worked with Criminal and Devlin and we’ve got Yogi on there who’s worked with Professor Green. Jade: We keep popping up, we’re going nowhere. Tanya: Management were telling us no one would really know you

Mr Wondah

Fe-Nix are bringing girl power back and are ready to take the UK by storm! Hotly Tipped for big things this year, they are currently the European faces of Apple Bottoms Jeans and have supported N- Dubz, Tinchy Strider, and Diversity.

if you put out your own song so it was just a case of what cover are we going to do. We were thinking about all the songs we used to love when we used to go out rav- ing. The one track that stuck in our head was Lady Baby. Redd: That’s my song right there! Jade: She was a fan before she even entered the group (laughs).

You’re now signed to Ge- netic records. How did the deal come about? Jade: We got signed because of the buzz of Lady Baby. Trevor Nelson played it and people just picked up on it. From there, Univer- sal wanted to sign us and things just really took off. We ended up going on the N-Dubz tour as we were label mates. Literally that was our highlight, getting signed to Universal and going on tour straight away.

What was it like touring with such a high profile group like N-Dubz and performing for so many people? Tanya: We’ll it was absolutely amazing! Because N-Dubz have a really loyal fan base, we have so many loyal fans now because of

that tour. The guys were so much fun. Jade: The guys were crazy! Tanya: Tulisa’s cool as well so it was a lot of fun. After the tour we got sick because we were living off McDonalds (All laugh).

So how was ‘Swagga’ to produce? Who was producing that? Jade: Skillz (Mr Skillz) was the original producer, and then the video version was TMS.

And the video itself. Any inter- esting stories from that shoot? Tanya : What happened is that we did an audiition at Pinapple Dance Studios for male dancers to be in the video. We said we wanted really good-looking guys because they had to have their tops off and stuff.

They didn’t have my number then? Tanya (Laughing) : Yeah where were you? You weren’t there for us! So anyway we auditioned and it’s funny because Pinapple Dance Studios were doing a documen- tary at the time. Jade: We had some geeks come

in and we had to make them look hot!

Right ok, so obviously you’re the European faces of Apple Bottoms jeans. So tell us about the transition from that to the launch of your own clothing line. Tanya: Yeah, we got loads of free clothes from Apple Bottoms so we were all happy about that. (laughs) Now we’re releasing our own clothing range from Punkyfish, and it’s going to be in 35 stores all over the UK.

So where did the ideas come from for that? Tanya: Well we just kind of brain stormed and then put our ideas together. We had an idea to make it kind of a ‘Sin City’ vibe so we worked off of that colour scheme, and it was funny because Lee actually created his own character!

Lee Ryan, he’s ex-Blue? All : Yeah!

You girls are very involved with the creative process and the image you portray. Do you think that gives you a greater

control of how the group is percieved? Ayshen: You enjoy it more as well when you’re involved. I mean, Tanya’s the stylist, Jade does the choreography, I do the diary or- ganising and Redd does the music direction. Jade: We’ve all got very strong personalities, we don’t really like being told what to do so... (All laugh)

The album’s called ‘Uncut Fairytales’ I hear, what’s the theme behind that album? Jade: Well they’re all life experi- ences. They’re all things we’ve experienced ourselves, a lot of people out there will sugar-coat things, but life is’nt like that. So really we’re just giving the real ver- sion. It’s more about being real. Tanya: You’ll hear it actually, we’ve got a lot of skits on the album which actually relate to fairtales. Redd’s got one that relates to red-riding hood. So we’re putting our own twist on things, kind of like un-cut versions of fairy tales.

Quick Fire Questions:

Who’s the messiest in the hotel rooms!? All: Redd!

Who’s the last to get out of bed when you have an early start? All: Redd! Redd: Alarms… I don’t know who invented them!

Well like I said, I’m really impressed with what you’re doing. You’ve managed to find a niche. There’s a gap for a group like you, and there’s no one else out there doing what you’re doing. It’s entertaining, it’s balanced, and I do think it’s time for the Fe-Nix wings to fly. So thank you very much! I’ll get my people to call your people about me being the 5th member of the group then... Redd: Yeah we’ll do lunch... ; )

Fe-Nix’s new single ‘SWAGGA’ is available on iTunes now!
