THE GUESTLIST NETWORK | JANUARY / FEBRUARY 2011 MISTAJAM

MistaJam continues to spin the hottest tracks for Radio1 since being scouted back in 2005. We caught up with him to go over his DJ and um... origami skills.

Joanne Bristowe

You started DJing at the age of 14, have you always wanted to be involved in music? I think so, for as long as I can remember I’ve always wanted to do what I’m doing now. It’s my dream job.

You were talent scouted at one of your own events in Notting- ham back in 2005 how has life changed since then? It’s changed beyond belief. I’ve been given the opportunity to do something I’ve always wanted to do. Since then I’ve tried to build on the success each year. If I was to say 6 years ago to the person I was then that I’d be doing what I am now, I’d be really happy, very happy.

So your shows on BBC Radio 1Xtra cover the best of new Urban Music. Who’s doing it big for you right now, any one to watch for this year? There’s so many people I think are going to be really big but keep an eye out for Jessie J. She’s literally just won critics choice award at the BRITs and in the Sound of 2011 list she’s definitely got something different. The sound of Dubstep is going to continue to grow. What I do at the Radio and Speaker Box it’s all about giving artists on the underground that exposure. They can go absolutely massive in a space of a few weeks, because they’re working really hard at it. They know what there doing and once you expose that to a wider audience more people hear it.

As well as your Radio skills, we hear your a bit of an all rounder by having an acting history and a bit of a soap opera past, being involved in Eastenders. You dabble a bit in writing for magazines, music based TV work. Is there anything you can’t do? Yes.... I can’t do origami! (Laughs) I like to think I can turn my hand to anything I feel passionately about. Radio’s my passion I’d like to think I’ll have a long career, but other things will come and go. Hopefully I’ll be able to branch out into other bits and bobs.

You interview the biggest names out there? Who’s been your most interesting guest? Any funny stories? To be honest I’ve been really lucky. I’ve interviewed some massive names but I’ve never really had anything go wrong. The biggest

name we’ve inter- viewed on the radio was Be- yonce and she was really really nice. She re- ally blew my mind, properly media trained. Before she even walked into the room to be inter- viewed she’d made sure that she‘d found out what my name was. I walked up and she was just like ‘Oh hi Mista- Jam’ and I was like ‘oh wow.’ I’m really lucky. I tend to support a lot of underground artists who are yet to be divas! So I haven’t had to deal with that yet.

If you could interview anyone from the past who would it be? I definitely would want to interview somebody who was a strong radio personality to me when I was growing up. That was John Peel, I’d love to be able to sit down and not even interview him just go to the pub and have a pint and a chat. Unfortunately I joined after he’d passed so I never got the chance to meet him, but I’ve heard stories around the building about how great a man he was. Obviously being a child of the 80’s Michael Jackson, if you were born in the 80’s and say you aren’t a fan you’re a liar (laughs).

Have you ever had an embar- rassing on air blurp? I’m very good, one of the safest pair of hands they have in this building. (laughs) I try not to put my foot in it on air because I’m so scared of losing my dream job. I don’t want to do the wrong thing, so I’m very careful. I’m sure that will all change before long though. (laughs)

You’ve been described as the ‘Golden Boy of Radio 1’, ‘Clearly the future of radio’ and ‘No hype, just fact’. How do you feel about these amazing compliments? I feel that it sets a lot of pressure on my shoulders to live up to those expectations (laughs)! It’s amazing the kind of response I get on air and in the clubs. It’s just brilliant the stuff that I believe in, other people believe in so I’m really happy.

Can you give us an exclusive? Oooooh that’s a really good one! I can give you one specific exclu- sive to the radio show. It is that at some point this year I’m going to be doing a live outside broadcast from Laby- rinth’s studio.

Amazing! He’s the guy that pro- duced Tinie Tempah, Simon Cowell we call Labyrinth. He’s the future of British music. That’s an exclusive we haven’t told anyone yet!

What’s next for you this year? Literally playing for who-ever will have me. People don’t need to necessarily take me seriously, but need to take the music that I play seri- ously. Just pushing things to the next level with the show and with the underground artists. Also, with Speaker- box which is a series of club nights, just trying to build on what we already have.
