MATT ATHERTON set new personal bests in a stunning session, with this 53 lb mirror


carp, and a 37 lb 8 oz common (above). The Northampton-based angler added six more 20 lb-plus carp in the same session.

HIS 53 lb mirror carp was part of a mega haul for Matthew Atherton.


The 34 year old from Northampton


was targeting an undisclosed southern stillwater when he set new personal bests for both mirror and common carp. Matt, a software sales manager, said:


‘I arrived at the lake on Friday morning and dropped into a rather unfancied swim and suffered a blank for the first 27 hours. ‘I lost one on Saturday morning around


9am, which I was pretty unhappy about, but then it all kicked off! ‘I was fishing to a very small depression in


the lake bed at about 30 yards, and over the course of three nights, seven or eight fish came to the right-hand rod, even though there was probably only 8 ft between all three end-tackles. ‘My first fish banked was a lovely 28 lb


8 oz mirror. ‘This was then followed by a truly


enormous, jaw-dropping 53 lb mirror – needless to say, a new PB. ‘I followed that up within the hour with a mirror of 21 lb 10 oz, and then another

one hell of a smile on my face that night, but I was out of the bag at 1.30am to do battle with another enormous fish – this time a common of 37 lb 8 oz (inset) – my second PB in 12 hours! ‘That following
