TONY’S WEEK
x
VERY rarely do I tread old ground in these recommendations but this is an exception to the rule for good reason. A couple of weeks back I wrote about the British Waterways-owned Naseby Reservoir, Naseby, Northamptonshire. The subject of the jottings was Martin Brierley and
he read the article and e-mailed me. Martin really rates the water and it wouldn’t surprise him if it does a 30 lb pike this winter. He recently took a mate, Leighton Green, night
fishing for pike at Naseby. It was Leighton’s first time at piking and he caught one at a spit under 18 lb. I’m sure Leighton received a little bit of assistance from experienced piker Martin, a winner of the coveted British Pike Championships! Martin does in fact help a lot of people get into
pike fishing, giving them confidence not only catching them but handling them too. If any reader wants to try a day’s piking at Naseby feel free to give Martin a call on 07792 212679 to arrange it; he will be only too happy to help. It’s £6 for one rod or £10 for two, on the back. If
you want to know more on Naseby call Harry on 07904 493417. Back on the canal scene now and I was
beginning to wonder if I could ever recommend

the Shropshire Union Canal at Autherley, Wolverhampton again. Well, thanks to BW’s stockings (see Your Shout) the sections controlled by Mid Leisure and Wolves AA are back to where they were with a subtle difference. Recent match catches have finished not far short
of 20 lb and here is where the subtle difference applies. The catches are mainly of the newly stocked skimmers - they are well outscoring the roach and there are enough of them showing too! Most of the skimmers are under 1 lb but there
are exceptions as one of my pals found out when he fished caster in the track there. Terry had a bream of

is Canon Bridge Fishery, Madley, Herefordshire. There are two main pools, Heron and Walrow, plus a silver fish-filled Training Pool, perfect for beginners. The Heron Pool is highly regarded with the right
stockings of carp, plus a host of other species. While some fisheries fail to respond in the winter months you can keep catching on this one just by using simple baits like maggots and casters. The fishery is well suited to all, including the
disabled and you can even get a bite to eat there. The carp run to 24 lb. It’s just £5 for a day or £3 for under-16s, disabled and OAPs. Call 01981 252919 or pop into Woody’s Angling
Centre (01432 344644) in Hereford itself - he knows every droplet of land-lying water in the area!

and recommends… WHERE? STAFFS-WORCS CANAL, Teddesley, Wolverhampton, West Midlands. WHY? ‘Catches are getting much better mainly thanks to the fish that British Waterways have stocked.’ WHAT’S WORKING? ‘The better fish are falling to all the usual canal tactics fished towards any feature or down the far track.’ WHAT BAITS? ‘With the amount of new fish in the canal there are all sorts of baits that work very well. Caster can sort out the bigger fish but other baits like punched bread, maggot, pinkies and squatt will all catch these fish.’ TICKETS: call in Bilston Angling Centre and they will fix you up with a day’s fishing here. They also run quite regular competitions here and on other canals if you fancy that. Contact 01902 495366.

YOUR starter this week is the River Thurne, Potter Heigham, Norfolk (01603 782453). I recently popped into the village chippy and sat by the river below the bridge for 30 minutes or so. Kevin Ball was popping out fish after fish on maggot tripped along the bottom. Kevin had been
there for a couple of hours or so and had about 8 lb of small stuff in his net. A few days earlier, fishing a very different swim, the Essex angler told me he had netted around 40 lb of skimmers and big roach fishing punched bread. Next to the Twenty Foot River, Whittlesey, Cambridgeshire (01733 204170). Fishing a
swim near Turves, Wisbech angler Graham Brown presented small freshwater deadbaits to net a fine brace of zander during a very stormy session. However, it didn’t stop the predators feeding hard as Graham put a 9 lb 4 oz and 9 lb
8 oz zander on the bank, one either side of midday. Finally to Brewery Farm, Coningsby, Lincolnshire (01932 583630) where a mild spell
coinciding with low pressure resulted in a few nice carp being taken from this CEMEX venue. Presenting white 10 mm boilies accounted for a couple of fine fish of 17 lb and 18 lb
4 oz from a swim off the far bank. Pike to low-doubles have fallen for sardines and smelt presented close to the bankside shelf. Anglers fishing light feeder tactics are netting skimmers, roach, rudd and perch with more bites as the light fades.
