INSIDE LINE...
FAMOUS anglers talk exclusively on matters close to their own hearts. This week we talk to ace carper Glenn Maulkerson, who has just notched up the milestone of 25 UK 40 lb-plus specimens.
Glenn had mixed fortunes in France – a blank and then a dream session topped by this 64 lb mirror.

How did you get into fi shing? I started going when I was about nine or ten with my father John, mostly catching silver fish around the Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk area. He also liked river fishing, so we often used to travel across to the River Wensum. A local lake called Rushbrook had some carp, mostly singles, and I started fishing there. I was about 13 when I caught my first double, freelining luncheon meat, and I started to catch quite regularly.
And serious carp fi shing? I’d got into surface fishing at Rushbrook and really enjoyed it; you could really get them going on Mixers. I caught some better fish around the mid-to- upper double-figure mark while tench fishing at another venue. And a river I was fishing then got polluted, so I drifted into the carp scene.
When did you hit your fi rst milestones of 20, 30 and 40 lb fi sh? In the early 1980s I had my first 20, at 27 lb and, if I remember clearly, on a shelf-life Crafty Catcher Black Cherry boilie. Most of my lakes had fish only to upper doubles, so it was great to break the barrier by quite a bit. I started to catch a few 20s, and around ’86-87 I had my first 30 – a leather of 30 lb 2 oz from a syndicate lake. I think it was 1998 before I had my first 40, at 41 lb 4 oz. That’s an amazing fish. It had a fungus problem and lost all of its tail. A koi doctor was called in and used malachite green gel and it totally regrew. It’s still alive now and has gone to 48 lb 8 oz.
GLENN shows off his PB 47 lb 12 oz mirror carp.
Did you ever think you’d hit 25 40s? I never thought about such totals, as when I started it wasn’t really feasible. There are a lot more 40 lb-plus fish about now. I’ve just hit 26 UK 40s from about five or six different venues. I don’t try to have recaptures, but there have been a couple. I’m a bailiff on one water and I went down this year for a social for two nights and recaptured a 40, and that was the first of the three 40s that are in there caught this season.
What are your PBs? My best mirror is 47 lb 12 oz; common 45 lb 8 oz; and leather 40 lb 2 oz. I haven’t had a 40 lb fully scaled mirror, but that is on my ‘shopping list’. I would love to catch one. I’ve had nine or ten of the big ones from the Essex Manor now, so I won’t fish it again once my ticket has run out, as I don’t want to keep catching the same fish. There are a couple in there that I haven’t had, so it would be nice to get those before I leave.
Any other angling ambitions? I would like to have a 50, and I joined the Manor to try to catch the Amphibian. I had her over my baits twice, but she didn’t go down on them. And sadly she died, so she’s out of the equation. Ideally I’d like to catch a really big uncaught fish from an unpressured big water – catching the unknown.
How often do you fi sh? I fish about once a fortnight at the moment, but it all depends on work commitments. I’m working as a kitchen
