Although some would argue that it never really went away, the advent of touchscreen technology, coupled with the development of mobile processors and a huge software ecosystem, has given the sector a much needed boost to the mass market.

RISE 1% Market researcher Deloitte has predicted that this year’s Christmas consumer spend will be one per cent higher than last year. A survey found that 71 per cent of respondents intended to spend more on gifts, while 79 per cent intended to spend more on entertainment and leisure. “Each year, consumers tell us they will do whatever they can to enjoy Christmas and this year will be no different,” said Deloitte’s UK head of retail, Ian Geddes. Unfortunately, the rosy forecast is not expected to continue in to 2011, when Deloitte expects that the industry will not see any growth over the course of the year.

SELL VIRTUAL CURRENCY Tesco and GAME are set to begin selling Facebook virtual currency called ‘Facebook Credit’ which may be used to buy digital items within Facebook games. Gift cards of Facebook Credit ‘currency’ can be bought from retailers to buy virtual objects or they can be earned through applications as rewards.

ENTERS UK MARKET Australian consumer electronics e-ttailer Kogan has launched a web store in the UK selling TVs, sat navs and other devices. Kogan launched into the the Australian tech retail scene in 2006, taking advantage of an under developed e-tail market, and is now seeking to echo this success in Britain. “Kogan is going to breathe new life into the UK electronics retail industry and give people what they want,” founder Ruslan Kogan said.
AMAZON BRINGS ‘BLACK FRIDAY’ TO UK
E-tail giant Amazon has brought the ‘Black Friday’ sale season to the UK, in what was formerly a US only discount period following Thanksgiving. From Monday November 22nd, Amazon kicked off ‘Black Friday Deals Week’ with over 200 discounts on a range of products including game consoles, TVs, Canon cameras, toys and Blue-ray movies. “Amazon is always looking to offer exceptional value for money, especially in the run up to Christmas, and will replicate that activity for the benefit of all customers here in the UK,” said Amazon UK boss Brian McBride.
UK TO SPEND MORE ON TECH
British households are expected to spend 115 (£97.60) each on consumer electronics this Christmas, making it the most popular gift category. According to a survey by the Centre for Retail Research commissioned by price comparison site Kelkoo, UK families are set to spend the most overall this Christmas compared to other Western and Northern European countries – an average of 756.44 (£642.24) per household.
