EYE ROBOT

Suraj Verma, an MSc student from Bradford University’s School of Engineering, Design and Technology, has created a wireless robot controlled by the human eye.

The project, which has been named IRIS (Intelligent Recognition for Interactive Systems) Communications, was supervised by lecturer Dr Prashant Pillai. A head-mounted eye tracker detects the movement of the eye and accordingly controls the navigation of the robot via Bluetooth.

WHERE I AM working on any given day depends on whether I have meetings or not, which brings a welcome variation to my day-to-day work. Synology’s UK head office is in Milton Keynes, which is conveniently where I live, but also has good access to London by train – great for anyone who needs to be mobile like me. Today I have come to the office and will spend the first half hour or so filtering through my emails. If something is urgent, this can shake up what I had scheduled for the day; my plan of action can be scuppered within minutes of walking into the office. Business never stops and this is particularly true for Synology. Not only is the IT industry incredibly fast-paced, but with our international headquarters being based in Taipei I am greeted by a full day’s communication from colleagues in Taiwan. In recent weeks we’ve launched a new operating system

iOS 4.2 for the iPad is astonishing the more you get

to use it. Transforms the device, I reckon. Airplay and

multitasking especially good.

First batch of Advent Vega sold out nearly as fast as Take That tickets this morning. Good omen!

for our products and also introduced a number of new units to our product range. Today I will be looking at how a campaign is progressing and what exposure I have been able to generate from website and publication review teams. The Synology products are usually received very well by reviewers. By close of business today, I will have sent out a number of units to reviewers I met with last week, studied some proposals for advertising campaigns in preparation for meetings later in the week, and put together an initial draft for next quarter’s strategy. At the end of today I’ll be off to the gym, before

returning home with my tail between my legs to explain to my housemate that I’ve controversially arranged to host a film night on a Monday at our apartment… shattering our Monday night football routine.
