MUST BE THE MOBILITY... TWO OF our retailer comments made me pause for thought this month. The first was that customers are looking for greater volumes of storage and much faster processing speeds in their laptops. It seemed to me to be a strange
statement, because when looking at this month’s sales charts the first thing I noticed was the arrival of some really interesting desktops for the first time in a while. Top of the list is the Acer X3950, a standard sized tower that offers up to a terabyte of storage powered by one of the Intel Core series processors. Other entries include the HP Pavilion P6520, an impressive media centre PC, which offers a terabyte of storage along with six gigabytes of DDR3 RAM and is powered by a quad- core AMD Athlon II 630 processor. Compare these with the 2.2GHz
Toshiba Satellite, which carries one gigabyte of RAM and a 250GB hard disk drive, or the Acer Aspire 5734, which offers 3GB of RAM with a 320GB HDD and is powered by the 2.3GHz Pentium T4500. Even the best specced laptop on the list – the Packard Bell EasyNote – carries an Intel Core i3 with 3GB of RAM and a 320GB HDD. So why don’t customers buy a
desktop then? This was my immediate thought until I saw the second comment to make me stop: “Desktops are now a thing of the past, we sell a lot more laptops.” Since storage and processor speed are
such high priorities among consumers, there must be a third aspect: Mobility. Mobility sells, and with tablet sales
through the roof and Steve Ballmer literally shouting about the opportunity in cloud services, it’s obvious that this the way the market is going too.
