Boosting Your Tech Credentials W

ith the predicted growth in technology jobs, government agencies are realizing that they do not have enough internal

personnel resources to meet these needs. Their solution? To call on third-party employers, such as Reston-based Serco, a provider of professional, technology and management services focused on the federal government.

“Outsourcing has been a significant boon

for people in the technology field,” Louis Montgomery, senior vice president of human resources said. “The unemployment rate in the Washington, D.C., area has been much lower than the rest of the country, and a good part of the reason for that is outsourcing.” Just because technology jobs are on the rise, however, does not mean they are yours for the taking. You need the skills, Montgomery said. In this competitive job market, employers want to see job candidates with recent certifications and workforce credentials, using those credentials as a way to tell which applicants have both experience and the latest skills. If you are already employed, see if your

company offers training in technology-related areas, Montgomery advised. At Serco, for example, employees can take advantage of Serco’s Business Academy, which offers a 24/7 online set of courses free of charge. Ayinde M. Stewart, president and CEOof Clear Resolution Consulting, which provides strategic management and technology- related solutions from its headquarters in the UMBC Technology Park, suggested that those interested in pursuing a tech job continue to increase their professional knowledge and their overall marketability through part-time degree programs, certificate courses and “consistent, hands- on, 9-5 skills growth.”

“Those technical skills, coupled with core

skills like strong interpersonal communication and the ability to translate customer needs

into strong technical requirements, will ultimately result in the development of new technologies, which will take candidates far in this region,” Stewart said. Stewart cited onenewadvanced learning solution in particular: “TCS-Solvern’s Art of Exploitation courses have gained a lot of attention and seem to be the answer for how to train the next generation workforce.” These courses are unique because they couple corporate partnerships with instructor-led course offerings that are also research- driven, Stewart added.

In this competitive job market,

employers want to see job candidates with recent

certifications and workforce credentials.

“The courses stay ahead of the technology curve and are relevant,” Stewart said. “The students leave those courses keyboard-ready with real-time technical knowledge that is bolstered by institutional creativity.”

Because the technology field is quite

broad, the more certifications you can show a prospective employer, the better, especially

if they progress from one level to another, Serco’s Louis Montgomery added. “The more senior the level of certification, the more depth of knowledge you will prove to have.” Make sure that additional training and certifications are related to your primary credentials, Montgomery continued, and keep your skills current and up-to-date. “An ITL certificate, for example (for those seeking jobs on an IT help desk) is more meaningful than a certificate in COBOL, which is a dated technology,” Montgomery said.

By staying on top of developments within your field, you will learn what skills you need to brush up on or acquire, Montgomery advised. He recommended looking at websites of companies you are interested in to see what types of jobs they are hiring for and what requirements you need. “Determine what you want to do and

then get the credentials you need,” Montgomery said. 
