to squeeze out the spongers ASK AMY

Party-thrower wants Dear Amy:

My husband and I have hosted an annual holiday party for nine years. Although it is a lot of work, we do have a great time. Among our other guests, we

have included the parents of our children’s friends from sports and other interests. They come and enjoy themselves and now expect to be on the guest list every year. Some of these people are our friends but there are a few who have never reciprocated an invitation. I have never once been invited into their home. I would like to skip the party

this year and resume it again next year to weed out the guest list. My husband disagrees and just wants to omit these people from the list (about 10 couples)

and continue with the party. Always the Hostess

I’m with your husband on

this. Not celebrating in a way that you enjoy as a way to weed out an invitation list is self-punishing; it also penalizes the people you truly enjoy hosting. Social events are fluid, and

they should be. People enter invitation lists, and if they can’t find a way to make the host feel valued (either by reciprocating or by appreciating the event adequately), then the host should assume that the guests’ interest in your household is extremely limited, and quietly move on.

Some of these guests may be

forward enough to call just before the event to ask if their invitation got lost or to inquire about why they haven’t been invited. This creates the sticky situation of how you should respond. You could offer a diplomatic statement, such as, “We’ve really enjoyed having you over the years, but this year we faced the tough decision of having to amend our invitation list.”

Dear Amy: My biological father and I got

along well until about two years ago. His calls decreased in number, and in late 2009 he moved without telling me where he’d gone.

When I finally found him earlier

this year, I tried e-mailing and calling him. It wasn’t until I sent a letter that he called me, and he hasn’t called me since. After my last conversation with him, I received news about my health that changed my life. I’m debating whether this man deserves to know, and if he does, how to tell him. My stepfather is wonderful and has supported me through everything, but I feel hurt that my biological father hasn’t even taken the time to contact me, his

only child. Amy, what should I do? Confused in Colorado

Take the issue of what your

father does or doesn’t deserve out of the equation. Because this isn’t about your father, or what he deserves. This is about you. You should write to your

father and tell him exactly what you want to say. And then you should not expect him to respond in any particular way. Your father sounds like a massive disappointment, dad-wise. Your job is to manage your hurt and disappointment in him while striving to do differently in your own life. You are fortunate to have a

stepfather who is available and able to be your loving parent. This healthy relationship is what you deserve. Take your comfort where you find it, from the people who know and love you the best.
