ulous background music, gasped, “Meggie has changed her status from single to married!” The source of this dastardly informa- tion? “FacePlace!” Nikki moaned. FacePlace. The social network- ing site in which people upload photos, write wall posts and an- nounce marriages to their boss’s fiances — but only in the “Y&R” land of Genoa City. If Nikki lived in “30 Rock”-ville, she and Liz Lemon would be friends on “You- Face.” If she were a guest star on “The Closer,” she could be “matched” with Brenda Leigh on “
LAGuysandDolls.com.” Or in the gritty faux New York of “Law and Order: SVU,” Nikki and Detective Benson could create spangled av- atars and frolic about in the Sec- ond Life-inspired “Another You- niverse,” two hot cougars on the prowl. As social networking sites be- come ubiquitous in real life, TV execs must correspondingly make them ubiquitous in their characters’ lives. But a fear of liti- gation (earlier this week, Face- book filed a trademark infringe- ment lawsuit against parody site
Lamebook.com) means that tele- vision worlds often get their own evocative online destinations. “We had one story line where a
character who was an aspiring singer was posting her videos all over ViewClick,” says Maria Bell, head writer of “The Young and the Restless.” Bell knows that in- corporating Internet plotlines into her show is necessary to stay current, but “in some ways, tech- nology has really ruined classic soap story lines. You know, ‘She’s left town! Where has she gone?’ Well, didn’t she bring her cell- phone?” “We have a show coming up with a Web site, ChuckMillsRa-
pedMe.com,” sort of a DontDate-
HimGirl.com on steroids, says Neal Baer, the executive producer for “Law & Order: SVU.” The “Law & Order” franchise, ripped from the headlines as it is, has a ready stable of pretend Web sites. In the world of “L&O,” teens strip their clothes off on FaceU- nion; Detective Benson once had to track down a Mormon girl gone wild in her profile pics. This, perhaps, gets at why Facebook might be less than pleased for the free publicity that “Law & Order” might bring. Nobody wants their site to be the place where in- nocent girls go to disappear. Whenever “L&O”writers invent a fake site, they register the do- main name to make sure they own the rights. All of it is an attempt to con-
nect with the viewer. See how your favorite characters Face- book and FriendFace and My- Room and YourWorld, just like you. But much like the cinematic “555” telephone number, which jarringly reminds the audience that the girl handing the guy these digits is an actress, the fake social networking site reminds the audience that what they’re watching is a bizarro parallel uni- verse, one where the pokes and feeds and FarmVilles don’t oper- ate exactly as they should. Describe a character’s Jibber
addiction, and it sounds ridicu- lous. Replace it with Twitter and what it’s describing is half the au- dience. And type in www.FacePlace. com, and what comes up isn’t an error message, but a cheerful page that appears to be under construction. A message says that it’s coming soon.
