Arenas has 30, but it isn’t enough
wizards from D1
but ultimately, the Washington Wizards were unable to avoid a 103-96 loss on Saturday atUnit- ed Center. Arenas scored a season-high
30 points on 11-of-22 shooting, looking more assertive than he had in first four games after coming back from a right ankle injury. He helped the Wizards pull back from a 17-point sec- ond-half deficit to pull within five points with 13 seconds re- maining. Arenas came through when the Wizards got limited production from starting for- wards Al Thornton and Andray Blatche, who combined to score just 10 points on 5-for-20 shoot- ing.
Wall’s first matchup against
fellow John Calipari product and 2008 No. 1 overall pick Derrick Rose was the primary story line as the night began. Before the game, Wall said he waslooking forwardto the chal- lenge. “He’s a talented point guard that reached all the ex- pectations I’m trying to get to, all-star, rookie of the year, all those things,”Wall said. Rose attacked Wall early on,
getting the first points of the game on a pull-up jumper, but he missed his next eight shots before eventually settling down. He finished with 24 points and eight assists. Wall had16 pointsandsix assists, the first time this season that he failed to get at least seven as- sists.Wall had a fewspectacular plays early on, including an impressive layup in which he split Rose, Luol Deng and Keith Bogans to get to the basket. He brought the Wizards within 97- 91 with a three-pointer in the closing seconds, but he lacked thesameburst before he left the game. Hilton Armstrong had a sea- son-high 10 rebounds and eight points, getting playing time in the closing minutes as JaVale McGee sat. JoakimNoah had 21 points and nine rebounds, while Luol Deng added 20 points, 9 rebounds and 6 assists for the Bulls (5-3). KirkHinrich was announced
last during pregame introduc- tions and was greeted with a standing ovation from Bulls fans who remember him lead- ing the team to five playoff appearances in his first seven seasons in the league. During the first timeout of the game, the Bulls paid homage to Hin- rich by playing a video tribute, featuring images from his most memorable games. Hinrich tried not watch, but a few of a his teammates glanced at the video screen above the court. Hinrich sat on the scorers’ table and looked up after the video ended as fans again rose to give him an ovation. Hinrich was held scoreless
throughthe first half, anddidn’t make a field goal until he hit a three-pointer from the left cor- ner in the final period. He fin- ished with eight points. Arenas entered the game to a
chorus of boos with 4 minutes 14 seconds left in the first quar- ter. Itwasthe first time since his return that Arenas had received an overwhelmingly negative re-

action from the fans. Of course, it could’ve been because he was replacingHinrich. Arenas quickly attempted to
recover from his awful shooting performance against Charlotte the night before, when he missed 12 of his 14 field goal attempts. Arenas connected on three of his first four shots, giving the Wizards a 27-24 lead with a pull-up jumper to start the second period. Feeling con- fident in his legs, Arenas decid- ed to finally attack the basket, which led to some bad results, as he missed several attempts at the rim. Wall had similar struggles, as
he missed three layups, at one point hopping up and down in frustration. He helped tie the game at 35 with a fast-break layup, and later found McGee on an alley-oop dunk that brought every player on the bench out of his seat.Wallmade a soft toss and McGee yanked the ball in midair from Kyle Korver then dunked over him with authority to bring the Wiz- ards within one point. After a Bulls mini-rally, Yi hit
a three-pointer to bring his team within 46-42, the Bulls scored the last four points of the half, with Rose finding Corey Brewer cutting for a layup and then having a fast-break layup of his own. Young scored 11 points off the
bench.
