Charles Clark Robinson, USAF (Ret.) Lieutenant Colonel


LT Col Charles Clark Robinson, 92, U.S. Air Force (Retired), of Leesburg, Virginia died peacefully at home on October 23, 2010 surrounded by his family after along battle with MDS. He was born in Brooklyn, NY on February 15, 1918 to the late Charles Cliffordand Frances Fitzgerald Robinson. He attended Fordham University whereheexcelled in many sports and was one of the founders of its fencing club. After graduating in 1938, he worked in the Philippines as achemist and evacuated back to the States on one of the last ships out of Manila just hours prior to the bombing by the Japanese.


LT Col Robinson enlisted in the Army in 1942 and served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps in New Guinea and the Philippines. He transferred to the U.S. Air Force upon its establishment in 1947, wherehe served as an Intelligence Staff Officer during the Korean War, at NORAD in Colorado and various air bases in Europe and Africa. In civilian life, Lt Col Robinson taught Industrial Arts and Science at Edgar Allen Poe Intermediate School in Annandale Virginia after completing his Masters at American University and Old Dominion University. He was active in the Republican Party in Virginia and was invited to the 1981 inauguration of President Ronald Reagan. Upon retiring again, he was involved in church activities and traveled extensively. He was an accomplished artist, woodworker and musician. He read extensively and had avariety of interests including archeology,astronomy,military history,genealogy,crosswordpuzzles, science and classical music. He was also an avid NotreDame football fan and enjoyed the latest electronic gad- gets. His quick wit, notorious sense of humor and his smile made him loved by family and friends, and will be greatly missed. He was both an officer and a gentleman to the end.


He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 66 years -Ann Margaret Grimmelmann Robinson, his brother Gerald Robinson, his sister Virginia Rickenbach and his grandson Brian Dodd. He is survived by his daughters Ann Frances Dodd (Calvin) of Wilmington, NC, Jean Virginia Corliss (Donald) of Saranac Lake, NY,Patricia “Scottie” and Elizabeth Ann of Purcellville, VA.Healso leaves his grandchildren: Robert and Ann Margaret Dodd, Todd and Devin Corliss, and six great-grandchildren.


He will be buried with full honors at Arlington National Cemetery on April 29, 2011 after a memorial Mass at Fort Myers Chapel in Virginia. CHARLES FREDERICK SCHWARTZ May 2, 1916 -November 11, 2010


Charles Frederick Schwartz, 94, died Thursday, November 11, at Dujarie House, Holy Cross Village, with his family at his bedside. He was born May 2, 1916 in Baltimore, Maryland to Cora Miller Schwartz and Charles Herzog Schwartz, and grew up in the vibrant German community in Baltimore. He was the valedictorian of his graduating class at BaltimoreCity College and received the BaltimoreLatin Prize as the best Latin student in the Baltimorepublic schools. At the University of Virginia, he earned aB.A. degree, Summa Cum Laude, in Latin and economics in 1936 and aPh.D. in economics in 1939. He was also the catcher for the varsity baseball team and was elected to the Raven Society and Phi Beta Kappa.


He married Marika Rupis on June 7, 1941. They lived in the Washington, DC area throughout their married life together,until they moved to South Bend, Indiana in March, 2000. He was predeceased by Marika and his only brother, Allen Schwartz. He is survived by adaughter, Mary Louise Solomon and her husband, David Solomon of Granger,Indiana; ason, Charles Anthony Schwartz of Miami Beach, Florida; two grandchildren, Elizabeth Melpomene Solomon and her husband, Chad Konecky of Gloucester,Massa- chusetts and David Reed Solomon and his wife, Helen Marcy of Tolland, Connecticut; and two great-grandchildren, Marika Claireand Willis David, also of Tolland. An economist, he began


his career at the Department of Commerce during the Roosevelt administration, in the National Income Division and later at the Office of Business Economics. Together with Milton Gilbert, Ed Denison, and George Jaszi, he helped develop new techniques for measuring and defining “gross national product,” techniques which later were put to use in the systems of national accounts adopted by the OECD and the U.N. He also played apivotal role in preparing Hawaii for statehood by developing models for meshing their


income statistics with the national accounts. The Commerce Department awarded him their highest honor,aGold Medal.


He left the Commerce Department in 1958 and spent the remainder of his career working in the international arena with the International Monetary Fund. He was aspecialist in balance of payments problems and worked closely with a number of countries in Latin America and in Europe on monetary policy.His most notable achievement was his creation of the World Economic Outlook in 1969, an annual publication which he edited until his retirement in 1983. In recognition of the significance of this work, he was appointed Director of Adjustment Studies in 1979.


Charles Schwartz was aman greatly loved by his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He adored his family,baseball, and big-band swing music. He knew the lyrics of countless songs and sang them all until the last week of his life. He was proud that he saw Babe Ruth and that his cousin, Charlie Herzog, was alleged to be the only major league baseball player to win afight with Ty Cobb. When he took his first job at the Department of Commerce in 1940, he was also offered ajob as asportswriter for the Baltimore Sun. He sometimes smiled and wondered whether he made the right decision. Alife-long Baltimore Orioles fan, he managed to switch his allegiance to the Chicago Cubs after moving to the Midwest for the last decade of his life. Among the delights of his later life werethe friendships of the brothers of Holy Cross and other Holy Cross Village residents after he joined their community adecade ago. Resident of Greenwood, SC husband of Brenda McCurry Ludlow passed away Friday,November 12, 2010 at Self Regional Medical Center.


Born in Alexandria, VA he was ason of the late Clarence EdwardLudlow,Sr. and Mary Ellen Gaskill Ludlow.


He was retired from the Federal Bureau of Investigations in Washington, DC with over 25 years of service in the Division IIdentification Office. He was also amember of Southside Baptist Church. Lud was an avid tropical fish buff. He was also very fond of the sports world especially the Washington Redskins. He will be missed by his loving family and many friends.


Survivors are: His beloved wife Brenda McCurry Ludlow of the home; one daughter Debra Ludlow of Stevenson, Maryland; one sister Sandra Lud- low of Virginia; He is also survived by his beloved cats Nick and Jack.

He was an avid Louisville Cardinals booster,and he enjoyed golf,tennis, fishing and bridge.Hewas especially loved for his optimism, work ethic,broad sense of humor,singing and story telling prowess,and his exceptional joie de vivre. Anthony Joseph Steinhauser of Alexandria, Virginia, born August 25, 1919 in Richmond Hill, New York passed away on Monday, November 8, 2010 at the age of 91. Beloved husband for 60 years to the late Ellen W. Steinhauser and adored brother of the late Rose C. Steinhauser.Heissurvived by his daughter,Lore C. Steinhauser;son, Peter A. Steinhauser and his wife,Barbara, and grandchildren, Elizabeth and Emily; sister- in-law,Lore W. McCarthy,and nieces and nephews,Monica, Christopher,Paul and Lor- raine McCarthy; and brother-in-law,Peter Wallburg and his wife Catarina, and nephews, Billy and Michael.


AU.S.Army combat veteran of WWII, he was re-activated to the Korean Waras an intelligence officer and then went on to

He served proudly with the 83rd Infantry "Thunderbolt" Division in the campaigns of Normandy,Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe and served with distinction in ground combat in France,inBelgium, the Hurtgen Forest, the Battle of the Bulge and the Bridgehead over the Elbe River.The 83rd Infantry Divi- sion was recognized as aliberating unit by the U.S. Army's Center of Military History and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in 1993. Service to his country remained among Tony's proudest accom- plishments and he exemplified the values of duty,honor,God and country that are hallmarks of "the Greatest Generation".


He will be buried with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery in the spring and aprivate service will be held on Friday, November 19 at 11 a.m. at the Demaine Funeral Home,520 S. Washington Street, Alexandria, VA 22314.
