Severnside’s approach is to work as a partner with its clients, and provide much more than a waste collection service. For instance, the waste audit conducted at the start of a contract enables Severnside to
educing waste to landfill is finally being recognised as a key element in running a more sustainable business. Finding ways to reuse waste is the next
understand the quantities and types of waste that an organisation produces. From this data, Severnside can identify the largest waste streams and implement specific recycling solutions. At the same time, Severnside is able to add value to its client’s operations by providing advice and support to reduce the quantity of waste arising in the first instance. For Severnside’s supermarket clients, food waste is a key issue and the company has helped retailers change and simplify recycling processes to take food waste directly from the shelf. This has involved Severnside working with its parent company, leading packaging manufacturer DS Smith, to develop a shop-floor-ready corrugated organic waste containment unit for use in store and throughout the retail operation. Food waste goes straight from shelf to recycling box and the in-store disposal process is streamlined. Furthermore, the box can be recycled after use.
Severnside has also facilitated the use of existing logistical infrastructure to back haul waste to regional distribution centres where it is collected and then reprocessed at one of Severnside’s 15 regional recycling facilities across the UK. This has reduced waste collections for one retailer from more than 400 stores, to 15 distribution centres, helping save significant costs, carbon emissions and fossil fuels.
Severnside is also helping its clients streamline internal waste management processes. This results in better use of staff resources and helps to achieve cost and environmental savings through more efficient processes.
The key pillars to Severnside’s integrated recycling and waste management offering are: • No landfill provision • National network of recycling facilities
• Partnerships with a variety of third party recyclers to further process materials
• Acting as a partner to help clients improve their internal recycling processes
• Undertaking waste audits to understand how, where and why waste is generated
• Helping customers identify how to reduce waste – from procurement processes through to effective segregation of materials Sustainablility is at the core of
Severnside’s business. Its priority is to reduce waste and although its solutions may ultimately see less recycled, the overall objectives for its clients are achieved.
KEY ACHIEVEMENTS INCLUDE: • Reducing one of the top five supermarket’s waste management costs by 20 percent
• Reducing annual waste management costs by 30 percent for a high-street mother and baby retailer
• Overall recycling rates for one client went from 41 percent to 88 percent in 12 months, with some stores hitting 94 percent
• Utilising existing logistics operations to back haul waste, cutting collections from 420 stores to 15 distribution centres
IN SUMMARY
Severnside’s dedicated approach to sustainable waste management is delivering significant gains in environmental performance for its clients. It is committed to finding the best local and sustainable solution for waste rather than landfill disposal.
This approach is helping clients:
• Save costs by eliminating the need for landfill gate fees and tax
• Reduced carbon footprint • Improved environmental performance
• Reduce demands on virgin materials through recycling
Severnside pushes the boundaries set by traditional waste management companies by offering a variety of added value services to its clients. It is dedicated to going that step further and invests a great deal of time at the outset of a contract in understanding its client’s business, the waste produced and the processes already in place. With this knowledge, Severnside is then able to advise on new practices to help capture larger amounts of waste for recycling – for instance by improving waste segregation practices.
These services are expanding with demand. As client’s targets for greater environmental performance escalate year on year, Severnside is now offering a carbon analysis service. By taking into consideration the carbon footprint of different disposal and recycling options, Severnside is able to demonstrate to clients the most environmental solution for different waste streams. Armed with this knowledge, clients are able to put accurate figures for carbon savings against their sustainable waste disposal decisions.
