MOST SUSTAINABLE PUBLIC SECTOR ORGANISATION – EDUCATION
JOINT RUNNER UP University of Aberdeen
rom right down to our font typeface and how it affects toner usage to up there in the higher echelons of carbon savings obtained by power management software, to rain water harvesting; we’re investigating and implementing it. Over recent years the University has come a long way in engaging the sustainability agenda, through recruitment of a team of dedicated personnel and as a consequence of tightening regulatory regimes. How has our efforts to make change been communicated, who have we worked with, and has it been worth the effort?

The University has developed a corporate brand which it assigns to any environmental initiatives. Able – to do your bit (
www.abdn.ac.uk/environment/able). Simple, versatile, bright and succinct. This was developed through market research workshops with staff and students from differing backgrounds, and can now be seen emblazoned on vehicle livery, recycling bags, notice boards, thermal mugs, bike kits, pencils and other promotional wares to name but a few. Some examples of able branding are illustrated in the images above. Communication of the sustainability
agenda is imperative in achieving carbon reductions and reducing our impact on the environment. It is impossible to go into too great a detail but strategies to date have included those related to general awareness raising, “win-win” concepts, right through to academia and investing in people.
