SUSTAINABLE SUPPLIER OF THE YEAR – OFFICE PRODUCTS

WINNER Kyocera

YOCERA has built a strong reputation for the design-led approach it takes to increasing the sustainability and reducing the environmental impact of office printers and multifunction copiers with its ECOSYS range. Rejecting the traditional technology approach, in 1992 Kyocera developed a long life drum for its printers, which removed the need for complex cartridges and thereby reduced waste and the carbon emissions associated with manufacture, use and disposal. At the same time the simplicity of the new technology also reduced the costs associated with office printing, presenting a “holy grail” for organisations wishing to cut costs while also improving their environmental performance. Kyocera’s approach incorporates a

company-wide commitment to raising environmental awareness and responsibility in all areas of office activity in UK businesses. Kyocera engages deeply with all of its business partners, customers and with the environmental movement in the UK to promote waste minimisation and responsible consumption. Kyocera would like to be considered as Sustainable Supplier of the Year: Office Products, in recognition of its longstanding commitment to environmental issues and successful creation of a brand that offers both environmental and financial benefits to its customers.

INNOVATION AND

ENVIRONMENTAL PERFORMANCE: “ECOSYS” represents a continuous cycle of improvement which started with the development of the long life print drum in 1992.

Conventional laser print technology relies on a drum which is replaced every time the toner runs out. This is similar to replacing a car’s engine each time it runs out of fuel – both costly and wasteful. By developing a hard wearing amorphous silicon drum Kyocera removed the necessity of frequent drum replacement, instead making it a long life part of the printer. This makes Kyocera toner cassettes much less complex than the conventional alternative. See Fig. 1.

ECOSYS toner cassettes contain only 6 separate components, compared with the average of 60 found in traditional printer

cartridges. This greatly reduces the burden of recycling the cassettes and significantly reduces waste.

An independent test carried out by German organisation www.druckerchannel.de found that over 300,000 pages printed, a Kyocera workgroup printer produced 4.0kg of waste, while its closest rival produced 20.2kg of waste.

The simplicity of ECOSYS toner cassettes makes them smaller and lighter, therefore easier to transport and store with fewer resources.

COST EFFECTIVENESS AND ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS: Kyocera’s ECOSYS technology reduces waste by volume by 80% in a single workgroup device, producing 4.0kg of waste compared with 20.2kg for its nearest rival over 300,000 pages (ref: druckerchannel.de).

Example product analysis: In

2009 Kyocera Mita UK sold 1791 FS- 3920DN workgroup printers, thereby preventing the generation of 29 tonnes of toner cartridge waste that would have been created by a conventional printer. The consumables cost per page (CPP)

of Kyocera devices is markedly lower than competitor products. The FS-3920DN has a CPP of 0.56p (pricing provided by independent analysts Context

COMMUNICATION: External: Kyocera views education as one of the most important aspects of promoting environmental responsibility in UK business. As a manufacturer of office devices we recognise that we have a duty to try and ensure that our machines have as low an impact as possible during the usage phase. Kyocera addresses these impacts through the Green Card

www.contextworld.com). The competitive Hewlett-Packard product (LJ Ent P3015DN) has a CPP of 1.22p (street price), 119% higher than Kyocera. Over the lifetime of the device, taking into account purchase price and warranty this equates to a difference of £195. Kyocera has continuously worked to reduce power consumption by its devices. The result of this is that Kyocera devices now carry one of the lowest power loads on the market. This means reduced carbon emissions and energy costs for our customers.

When multiplied across the entire

Kyocera product range cost and energy savings are significant: Case Study: Kyocera customer RSA (formerly Royal and Sun Alliance) anticipates energy savings of 55% and cost savings of £1 million/year as a result of switching to a Kyocera Managed Document Service.
