SUSTAINABLE SUPPLIER OF THE YEAR – ENERGY
This is a crucial product development because it gives facilities managers more control over their electricity usage, as they can have up-to-the-minute information on their carbon footprint at any time – even by text.
AN ENVIRONMENTALLY-CONSCIOUS COMPANY – AND A UK MANUFACTURER
It is not merely through its technology that Claude Lyons has demonstrated a clear commitment to helping companies address environmental issues. The company is committed to being part of a sustainable supply chain, and as an entirely UK-based company with local manufacturing facilities, green business practices are part of its ethos. Claude Lyons has two manufacturing facilities, one in Basildon and one in Waltham Cross.
There are company-wide low carbon manufacturing targets, and both locations have their own ESS units installed to reduce consumption and CO2
emissions.
The company has also launched an initiative to replace all lighting with energy saving models, which will further reduce its carbon footprint.
Company policy requires electrical appliances to be switched off once work is completed, and there is a secondary check each day to ensure that any unnecessary loads are switched off for the night. There are also dedicated recycling facilities in multiple areas at all locations, including a dedicated programme for reusing packing materials to reduce both waste and costs. “When companies assess carbon
footprint it’s more than just kilowatt hours of electricity or tonnes of landfill waste. The sustainability chain extends much further in that green-minded companies have to think about the credentials of their suppliers as well, so our contribution to carbon footprint is a definite consideration for our customers,” explains Jim Mcllfatrick, Managing Director of Claude Lyons.
Claude Lyons has benefited from this mindset at a time when UK manufacturers are suffering. Because all of its operations are based in the UK and it uses local suppliers, transport-related emissions, the industrial equivalent of food miles, are very low. Claude Lyons’ customer J&J Ormond, a manufacturer of kitchens, bedrooms and bathrooms, cited low transport-related emissions as one of their reasons for choosing to install PowerSave equipment. JJO has a particular commitment to UK suppliers as part of its
effort to keep its overall carbon footprint low, and Claude Lyons fit perfectly into this strategy.
KEEPING UP WITH CRC The Carbon Reduction Energy Efficiency Scheme has prompted many companies to reevaluate their energy management strategies. Claude Lyons has taken a very proactive approach to helping customers with targets. Individual meetings have been arranged with existing and potential clients that qualify for the scheme to help advise them on how energy management fits in with CRC – particularly as the paperwork required for registration is onerous and complex. Carbon Trust and Salix funds are also available for PowerSave equipment, so Claude Lyons has taken an active role in educating qualifying companies of the financing options available. When the Environment Agency released the names of registered participants in June 2010, one of PowerSave’s largest clients, Hilton Hotels, was one of only two international hotel chains to be included on the list.
A 360° APPROACH MAXIMISES CUSTOMER SAVINGS
This CRC outreach and education initiative is part of Claude Lyons’ larger commitment promoting environmental awareness through communication with customers. The company’s comprehensive approach to installing voltage optimisation ensures that the customer has full information about their site before making an investment so that facilities managers get the best possible value out of a tailored strategy. Claude Lyons begins by carrying out a full survey of the site’s power conditions to assess the actual potential for energy savings. In addition to looking at the site’s electrical equipment and analysing its power supply, Claude Lyons uses three phase as opposed to single phase electricity logging to get the most accurate picture possible of the site’s conditions. This ensures that all power quality variations, voltage variations and harmonic disturbances are detected and factored into its proposed energy management strategy. Claude Lyons then recommends which equipment will achieve the greatest savings given the results of the survey. Once PowerSave equipment has been installed, Claude Lyons’ engineers visit the site to measure actual energy savings. This not only gives customers a concrete measure of success at the site, but also provides key data for
larger organisationwide reporting or for rolling out a similar energy management strategy to other sites.
Hilton Meats Cookstown, a de-boning facility in Northern Ireland, saw a 7% reduction in its electricity bill after installing the PowerSave’s ESS system as part of a continuing drive to reduce its energy costs and carbon footprint. Maintenance Manager Henry Devlin’s testimony is proof of PowerSave’s exceptional value for money. He commented that PowerSave technology “has proven itself to be both efficient and effective at reducing energy costs on site,” and as a result the company is looking at installing ESS units at its other facilities. Similarly, the PowerSave ESS was installed as part of a Ministry of Defence pilot programme in an officers’ mess at an RAF base in Yorkshire, which had a high volume of appliances and a costly lighting system. The ESS delivered energy savings of 12.5%, and Steve Young of strategic partner Technical Combined Solutions which installed the unit, commented, “The ESS from Claude Lyons is the ideal product for this type of application, as we come under increasing pressure to reduce CO2
emissions.”
Radisson Roe Park Resort achieved energy savings of 15% after they embarked on an initiative to reduce costs. This brought the resort’s power consumption down from 219kW to 185kW. George Graham, the General Manager of the resort enthused, “we at the hotel are very pleased with the installation of the solution, and the predicted savings are what we are looking for.”
A TRACK RECORD OF BUILDING AWARENESS AND ACHIEVING SAVINGS
With this comprehensive approach to delivering bespoke energy management strategies, Claude Lyons helps facilities managers achieve the fastest possible return on investment with the greatest possible energy and financial savings. It is an approach that capitalises on over 75 years of experience, and with Claude Lyons’ track record of success the company has firmly placed itself as a leader in promoting cost-effective energy management solutions for UK organisations looking towards a green future.
