SUSTAINABLE SUPPLIER OF THE YEAR – TOTAL FM SERVICE

WINNER Carillion plc

C

arillion is a leading support services company, operating in the UK, Europe, the Middle East, North Africa, Canada and the Caribbean.

In 2009 our total revenue grew by 4% to £5.4 billion.

Our support services include facilities management, particularly for large complex property estates. We are the largest provider of integrated property services to Defence Estates, we provide services to a quarter of the NHS and some of the largest names in business including Centrica, Siemens and AXA. Our services transform delivery in terms of quality, cost and the environment; sustainability is at the heart of our mission of ‘making tomorrow a better place’. We make Sustainability an integral part of our delivery, ensuring that our solutions for infrastructure, buildings and services contribute positively to society and we believe that striving for the highest standards of sustainability has been fundamental to our development and success over the last 10 years. To direct our resources where they have maximum benefit, we have identified

our key sustainability impacts. There are aligned with the four priority areas of the UK Government’s sustainability development strategy as shown in Fig.1.

COMMUNICATION

Communication is key to our sustainability success and we have a number of ways in which we communicate our plans, targets and achievements. We: • Engage employees at all levels and allow then to comment on our strategy and plans. Our Sustainability Committee is chaired by our Board Director, attended by operational Managing Directors and supported by a Steering Group of business leads with working groups focussing on communities, carbon and waste.

• Communicate our annual plan and focus our people on a monthly basis through our operational reports.

• Provide news and updates in a weekly electronic newsletter to all staff and provide employees with opportunities to discuss how they might make a difference.

• Provide environmental advice and updates through briefings and Tool box talks and training via webex sessions or on location.

• Have an annual week-long celebration of Sustainability coinciding with world environment day to provide education and engagement opportunities.

• Celebrate Sustainability successes – this year with our ‘S Factor’ awards which were launched during June’s Sustainability Week and culminate with our national final in Q4.

• Have email addresses for employees to make contact with the central team on sustainability issues or they can direct

questions/suggestions though their line manager and to the working or steering groups.

All our employees are given time during working hours to volunteer with community projects. Since 2001, we have given 1% of our pre- tax profits each year to community

activities and in 2009, we donated £25,000 to good causes chosen by staff to celebrate Carillion’s 10th birthday. Many of our projects, such as hospitals, are inherently valuable to communities. We often include additional community benefits in the scope of our works. If our operations impact on community members, we consult with them to minimise those.

As a result of our engagement and with the support of our employees we achieved fourth place in the category of ‘bigger companies with high environmental impact’ and eighth place overall in the Sunday Times list of Best Green Companies.

COST EFFECTIVENESS We work in partnership with customers to create Sustainable solutions that increase efficiency, reduce costs and achieve our shared sustainability objectives. We believe that our excellence in the delivery of Sustainable FM is a key differentiator which is key to winning repeat business and contributes towards maintaining our strong business performance despite the economic downturn.

On the Centrica contract we have delivered a number of programmes which delivered cost savings in 2009: • Water Reduction 9.43% • Energy Reduction 5.28% • Gas Reduction

PARTNERSHIP

Chaired by our Chief Executive we have a Sustainability Advisory Committee to shape sustainability strategy. It includes two independent external advisors, Dame Julia Cleverdon and leading environmentalist Jonathon Porritt, who encourage and challenge our thinking. By engaging with external

organisations, including ethical investment funds and Government policy makers, we see the wider picture, address the key issues, contribute to public debate and
